STi Short throw

I have been doing a lot of reading and most people compare the shift of the WRX to that of an 18 wheeler. I ordered my WRX in Feb. and the last contact that i had with the dealer was it missed the April boat so it will arrive in May. Anyway they said that I could still add things to my order so i called and wanted to add the STi short throw and the STi shifter bushing the price was 295.00 for the shifter $25 for the bushing. They said that the shifter would be port installed and the bushing would be dealer installed with a $60 labor charge. So my question is, is it worth the price for the performance? Anyone have this in their car? Whats your thought on the part?

Don't get it, buy a Kartboy Short Shifter and their bushings and install yourself. Much better than the SPT unit.

I went aftermarket. So did many others. Most of us DIY. The STI shifter replaces the linkage too. For aftermarket you just get the short throw shifter lever. Hence it is cheaper. You have to replace the front & rear bushings. Reportedly aftermarket bushings are better.

Read around a bit. I have personally covered this about ten times.

The factory "STi short throw" shifter only cuts a small portion of the shift distance down. The lever isn't really any shorter than the stock lever, but the linkage is shorter. It's also very expensive unless you get a heavy discount on it. If you can work the dealer to throw it in for dirt cheap, go for it.

The only reason I'd recommend getting it for cheap, is that since the main difference is in the linkage, you can combine the short throw linkage with any of the aftermarket levers... Further reducing shortening your shift.

Go aftermarket on the bushings. Get all of them. I don't think you'll find a post anywhere that doesn't recommend getting all of the Kartboy shift bushings.

Doesn't the Cobb SS also change the linkage, or am I making that up?

Cobb will allow you to lengthen the lever length independently of the length between the pivot and linkage. This will let you adjust your lever "height" while keeping a desired "throw".

Except that Kartboy doesn't make shift linkage or pivot bushings (Turn-in Concepts does, though) ;)

I never realized that TiC made the linkage ones. I just got the kit from TiC and figured they were all Kartboy, whoops. Thanks for the correction.

OP: SPT is good if you can get it worked into the price of your car, but if they are charging you more and adding it onto the car after the fact, totally not worth it.

Keep in mind the SPT shifter will only shorten shifts by 10-15% by changing the linkage some. But an aftermarket such as Cobb or Kartboy, will shorten shifts by shortening the lever and pivot point and actually shorten your throws by about 25-30%. And it will cost $200 less...and it is a much easier install that you can do yourself instead of paying high labor costs.
+1. The SPT one is a minor difference to stock. Again, I would only recommend it if you get the SPT one for cheap.

Anybody try the twm short throw? I am actually waiting for the delivery right now and curious how well it will work, or is it fairly similar to the kartboy?
Why don't you use google? You'll find plenty of reviews of it on the interwebs. The OP was not asking about specific aftermarket lever reviews, and it is kinda taking the thread off topic a good bit.

I'll use the money for a strut tower brace.
Waste of $$. Unless you're getting a hatch, and I'm not even sure the newer models benefit from a rear strut brace like '02-'07 did. Still, you'd want something like the Whiteline quick-release brace (if they offer that for '08+) so if you needed the cargo room, it was easy to dismantle.

Not off topic he may wanna check it out its a thread dealing with short throw if I was asking about a borla exhaust that's off topic but when I ask about something dealing with the topic I'm pretty sure it's not off topic. It's asking specifics. He asked about spt I asked about twm. Pay attention same topic

The OP was considering adding on the SPT option while it was at port. Normally the debate between the SPT shifter and an aftermarket shifter doesn't require reviews of every aftermarket shifter. I didn't mean to be a jerk, but the first time you asked about it, you didn't get any response because it was nested in a thread it shouldn't be.

Little testy, brah?

Btw if google was helpful I wouldn't have asked.
Let me google that for you

...I believe the second link down should help you out =). Most posts that have "TWM shifter" in the title from any forum with "wrx" or "sti" in the URL will probably help you out. They will give you more information about what you are looking for than this thread does.

I'm going to save the cash for a Perrin front strut tower brace....I knew I joined this forum for a reason. Once again thanks!
Save the cash as Matt said. The strut towers are quite close to the firewall in our cars. It's mostly bling with a bit of added weight. Some claim the brace helps reduce dashboard rattles... I'd just use felt tape personally. There are plenty of places to put the cash. Give turninconcepts a ring. They'll hook you up with a shift kit that is way better (and cheaper) than the SPT by itself
