Hey guys I got a 2012 wrx hatch and I was at the dealer today, and they said the access port would absolutely void the warranty... I knew that but I wanted to know if i could install an aftermarket intake without voiding my warranty. If so which ones?

Depends on the dealer. I had a boost leak and took it in for warranty. I had a Cobb intake, cbe, springs, tune and a boost gauge and my salesman laughed and said looks like somebody got the mod bug and then the service manager started yapping about his gc8 that he fully built for rally and a whole bunch of stuff I had no idea about. Haha. Good luck!

Why would you want to do that? An intake won't help without a tune, so if an AP is out for you, no point in the intake.

You can do a catback exhaust without voiding the warranty, just a noisemaker, though.

What's the difference? It might be a moot point from the owner's perspective.

I don't see how the law helps the owner at all.

If your claim is denied your choices will be to pay that dealer for a repair, pay another dealer or independent for repair, or several varieties of waiting: waiting for a SOA rep if you escalate, waiting for a lawyer to escalate and then for a SOA rep, and so on.

These latter options will not fix the car anytime soon, and none are guaranteed to fix the car at all.

I feel using authentic parts is the best option while under warranty because laws that seem like they protect consumers may actually only help the manufacturers of imitation parts. This isn't too unreasonable since it is those manufacturers that lobbied for the laws in the first place.

T0rque's story of being denied body work with a... muffler creating vibrations as an excuse is a terrible example of all this. Any excuse can be used, and its a shame if owners are left looking for lawyers when all they needed and deserved were free mechanics.

There are laws against voiding warranty due to modifications. Though a claim may be denied because of it. I.E. you have a bad tune, it runs lean and you have no motor anymore, that will be grounds to deny a claim. But, having an intake and then all of a sudden your transmission blows, you would be covered.

My buddy owns a 2011 Ford SVT Raptor, and the Ford dealership he uses said he was aloud to do any mod's, with warrantee still available, as long as they were installed by the dealer. That mite just be Ford, but I'd check with your dealer, because even though they are warranting an aftermarket part, they can charge alot to install it. (My buddy installed a 48" LED bar, which he wasn't going to do himself because he didn't want to mess with wiring.)

No. A dealer might be willing to install it (I doubt it, but hey, all dealers are different), but they most certainly won't tune for it. I'm not aware of any dealers that have the facilities necessary for tuning. You would need a Subaru tuning shop to do that, and then you would have the same problem as if you had bought an Accessport. Again, what makes you feel you need to have an aftermarket intake?

If you're concerned about your warranty, than just don't modify the car until the warranty expires. It's the safest and easiest way to have peace of mind, rather than try to navigate the unpredictable minefield of what a dealer may or may not deny a warranty claim on.

This post makes me spit out gibberish and broken swearing.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

YES they are not pulling your leg it can and will lead to warranty claim denial at that dealer. Now, if your radio goes on the fritz and you have an intake.. then no, they'll work the claim.. but if you wander in with a cel and a lean condition and/or further engine damage... YES they AND SOA will turn on you.

Need I remind again that when a person buys a new car they are signing an agreement that includes statements regarding obligations for consumer AND oem... if consumer breaches those agreements the oem no longer has legal binding to help you.

Get away from oem design and oem has no obligation to warranty. You want that intake, its in your hands if the sucker blows up. Run that intake without a tune and you'll definitely have your hands full when EL Kaboom arrives.
