TR vs. Non-TR

Whats the difference between the two, I keep seeing it talked about but I can't find the differences.

TR had single disk CD changer, different seats, different climate control knobs, no auto climate, different side skirts, wing and fogs were optional, and non painted side mirrors.

WRX added different side skirts, different seats, and different climate control I believe.

LTD added sunroof, leather, six disk changer, factory spoiler and fogs as standard (I know the spoiler maybe not the fogs), painted mirrors, heated seats, heated wiper blades, and heated mirrors.

I might be missing a few...but that's a good break down from memory.

Something is sticking in my head about cup holders. Maybe the TR didnt have rear cup holders...not sure on that.

No rear cupholder. Actually, the delete panel makes an awesome place to hide a bluetooth unit ;)

I don't think the TR has any side skirts at all (cause it's just metal on mine...)

the TR was designed to be modified by the owner, obviously all car are being modified regardless. you can say to a certain extent that the parts the TR are low quality. Subaru knowing the it would be best for the cost effiecient for the costumer to swap out parts. instead of spending the big bucks buying the WRX with higher quality parts. i hope you understand what im trying to say.

not neccesarily. TR means TUNER READY. its kind of similar to the EVO RS. the TR is a WRX without all the extras and i belive its lighter if im not mistaken.

First of all, Subaru never "failed" with the TR because in 06-07, a large majority of the WRX's stocked at dealerships were TR's and not standard WRX's. In fact, I saw more limited WRX's in my search for a car rather than the standard model at the many dealerships I visited or searched online.

If you look back using the search feature here or on NASIOC, you will see many posts that refer to the only WRX's physically available on the lot were TR's, during that time period.

And there are a lot of TR owners here on the forum. But, yes, I do get your point that the TR is not in the true sense a race-ready car, much like the radio-delete musclecars from the 60s.

As far as "low-quality", we all must realize that there are no low quality parts on a Subaru, in relation to one model to the the other. They are all sourced from similiar suppliers. So the suede seats in an STI are certainly of more value, but to say the seats in a TR or an Outback are low-quality is not correct. It's just a matter of cost. I figured this was what was intended in that comment, correct?

The single CD radio in the TR is just as good quality as the 6-cd radio in the WRX or STI, just not as costly from a unit price standpoint.

The side mirrors are the same material, just one is painted and the TR is not.

The seats are one interesting characteristic between TR, standard WRX, limited WRX, and STI. While I actually like the feel of the TR seats, I too would like to upgrade. But racing seats, like Subaru predicted we would go to if we bought a TR, can be very expensive, require additional mounting hardware, and lose the side airbags. So most who upgrade go with the STI interior swap. I can't because blue seats look like crap on a red car, but you get the point. Now JDM seats or STI limited seats are all favs, but really expensive, when you compare to using those funds for the engine, tranny, or suspension. And, myself, I've never actually heard of a TR owner swapping their seats for standard WRX seats (although I'm sure some have).

But, in conclusion, I do agree to what has been said, but please consider that at the point of purchase, many of us Subie-lovers didn't have a whole lot of choice on the dealer lots in regards to Standard vs. TR, if we wanted to buy a car off the lot (at least in my geographical area)

IMHO it's a failure not on the sales point but the concept rather.

Having bought a new 06 when they came out my experiance was Subaru also failed in the marketing aspect of the car. I went and told the dealership what I wanted (Not a TR) and they said they only offered one wrx trim level in 06 which was obviously way off base.

Offering a "base" verison of a vehicle with no performance difference and calling it "Tuner Ready" is laughable. They could have held off on the TR till 07 atleast simple because in 06 they offered the 2.5 motor and the 4 pot front brakes. The TR would have been a nice sales gimmick to break the gap between 06 to 08 as a 07 model. They wanted to enter the market with a "cheaper" offering to compete with the MS3, GTI, and the SRT-4.

Having turned down a TR that was dealer exchanged for me by a dealership that didnt know anything and having waited and found a WRX Limited I'm obviously a bit bias towards the LTD.

IMHO Subaru should have went 1980's bare bones with the vehicle...or given it a HP bump to entice buyers....not delete basic equipment found on the average econo car.

Your views may differ.

I agree with the TR not being a failure.... I saved 2-3K not buying "foo-foo" seats and sideskirts and a few others. Hell, I don't even use my AC as it is coming out this coming year (so having climate control and all that makes no sense). All in all, the politically correct term for TR could have been CR.... Change ready IMHO.

I have a TR and it is basically the exact same car with a few minor differences that I can easily take or leave...

Things I'm glad I didn't pay for:
6 disc changer - updated head unit was my first mod
wrx seats vs 2.5i seats - no big deal to me
mirrors - car is black so unpainted was fine with me
rear cup holder - not necessary, there isn't much room back there anyway

Things I would like to have:
STi side skirts - working on it
Automatic Climate Control - I get used to not having it but my dad got me hooked on the idea of "auto" with my moms old Buicks and i have loved it ever since, set it and forget it.

It is still a WRX and 99% of people have no clue it is any different, only you subaphiles. I love it, best car I have owned, hands down.

I have to put in my .02..... :p

I am the current owner of a 2007 WRB WRX TR. I had been waiting to purchase a WRX since I first saw them back in 2001, but was unable to due to the pricing. The difference in pricing for me from the TR to the WRX was about $3,000... which allowed me to finally buy one due to the low pricing. I have driven a Premium WRX, and to be honest, I actually prefer the TR.

As said in previous posts; I don't mind the black side mirrors.. the manual HVAC controls, the seats. What matters is the powertrain, which is why we all love our cars so much, right? :D

Yup it's oem WRB so it's an exact match. Click on my cardomain link on my sig to see pics of my car if you want to see what they look like

It's best to buy a pair of black unpainted covers (like you have now) and paint those. A lot of people break the fasteners on the original covers when you remove them. They're only like 20-30 bucks for the pair.

Lol look at all the TR people in here...

By 302's logic, the TR failed only at the name and not necessarily at the concept. The Tuner Ready version does have some luxuries and creature comforts that should be absent of a purely race car.

But in terms of saving 2-3 grand, that's not a big failure in any terms to me :) 2-3 grand for:
-a 6disc cd changer that sucks anyways?
-WRX "racing" seats that bolster no more than mine?
-mirrors/ skirts that will only get chipped? (thanks Subaru paint!)
-auto climate
-foglights (okay, kinda wish I had these standard)
-wing, meh

so i see all the groups for the hawk eye, blob eye, stonk eye, peanut eye, bug eye and so on and so forth.. my question is, WHERE IS THE GROUP FOR US "TR" OWNERS? :sadwave:

lets get this started already..

i dont see why we should be separate from the hawkeyes. they only made TR's in 06/07. if we did that then they'd make a group of sti limiteds, wrx limiteds, etc.

it's just a trim level, not anything special :p

i think the black mirrors look better than the wrb mirrors personally. I bought a wrx for the motor and awd, nothing else so my TR keeps me happy.
