Windshield Washer Fluid... confused...

Hey fellow wrx lovers and owners! :D

I'm a little bit confused about a few things regarding my Subaru.

I left the car parked and off for a little over a week (about 8 or 9 days or so) until this morning when I had to drive it to the mechanic's shop. After they were done working on my car I drove it straight to school. While driving, I got some bird poopoo on the windshield, so I tried to spray it off then wipe it. When I pulled the little knob on the right side, the wiper moved, but no fluid came out. :screwy:

So I guess what I'm asking is... what could be the problem? Did the mechanic accidentally bump/cut something allowing the windshield wiper fluid to flow out? Did the liquid vanish since my car was sitting alone and scared for over a week without being used? :confused1

Also, dumb question, but what windshield wiper fluid should I buy for a 2014 wrx limited sedan? :)

Thank you everyone for any help and advice and see you back on here in a little bit.

You can buy any kind of washer fluid. I usually buy what is on sale and the cheapest. In terms of the washer fluid that you had, it could be a matter of poor timing and that just happened to be the moment you ran out. Fill the washer fluid reservoir up and check it in a couple of days without use and see if the level has dropped. Or you can look for any signs of a puddle of washer fluid under your car as well.

I usually use water hose or empty old water bottles but in the winter I just grab washer fluid the orange one I think it has a lower freezing temp.
In a pinch I have gone to the dollar store and used some rubbing alcohol mixed with water. It wont deice but if you can get it mixed around it shouldn't freeze that bad.

Why did you have to go to the mechanic? A hose could have been pulled or maybe some gunk in the sprayer but for both thats too random of a coincidence.

Check for fluid if there is some then
1st park the car on dry pavement
2nd lift the wiper blades off the window
3rd press the wiper button
4th put the wiper down and lift the hood look for water in the engine bay and under the car.

I have always used straight window washing fluid. I have never had an issue with it.
Every once in a while the sprayer tip gets clogged, I just gently poke it with a sewing needle.

Wow! :)

Thank you everyone for your helpful responses! :D

Ok let me respond like this...

1 - I had the car taken in to get four tires replaced and wheels balanced.

2 - I know how to get the washer fluid to spray on my windshield, I have used it countless times.

3 - I'll see if I can clean anything out of the holes, safely, and then purchase good windshield washer fluid and check if it works after that.

4 - I will try not to use washer fluid (assuming it sprays and works fine) and see if it is draining. I doubt it is, but nobody can be sure. The car is brand new and I've been having problems with it left and right, which I find very strange lol.

5 - Is there anything that I am missing or should check?

If its brand new and your out of ideas always go to the dealership. As for activating the wiper spray some have accidentally been using the "mist" function (pulling on the lever) instead of the washer button easy head slap esp if its a new car to the driver.

Ok fantastic, I hope I can fix it up tomorrow! :)

Thank you both again very much and everyone else! :D

-side note-

I know I should probably open up a new thread, but, I noticed something recently and was gonna ask how to fix it...

When I press on the window button to open the window, it does not do it automatically unless it is the driver's side window. For the other three windows I have to press AND hold the button while opening or closing them. Is there a way to fix this? What could be the cause? :(

For the most part auto up/down feature is only for the driver window. Look on your window buttons and see if there is anything written on them, if not then they aren't auto if it says said word then you have an issue. Idk if that's standard but on my car its only the driver window and I'd say 90% of cars are very similar.

Also, why are you replacing tires on a 2014 ? And I highly doubt you washer fluid jets are clogged this early in your vehicles life unless you drive in a crummy area consistently . Also I would eliminate every possible solution and research research research everything. I would start with reading your owners manual , its amazing the things they put in there. No disrespect to you but how much research did you do prior to purchasing your car? Never have I heard someone ask the "type of washer fluid" they should use in a specific car. You do understand that's like asking what kind of air to use in your tires ? Not trying to be rude bro and I'm all about helping people but crack that owners manual open and learn your vehicle.

^---> was thinking the same thing. what turned you onto the wrx limited sedan? is this your first car ? the manual is the place to go. loved reading through that thing and trying to find stuff i didn't already know about that car.

and whats with the tires. was this car a cpo, private seller, dealership new?

1 - Yea I understand that some of my questions are a bit "dumb" and I really do apologize about that. I've never been too keen or knowledgeable about cars in the first place. I'm pretty hit or miss. I can look or hear a car and parrot back some "facts" about the vehicle, understand the basics of the engine and drive-train, but wouldn't trust myself going beyond just adding basic fluids under the hood.

2 - I wanted a sedan that I could drive in snow, rain, off-road, and daily. I wanted a sedan that had power and an aggressive sound within the vehicle. I also wanted a car that only came in manual since I thought of myself as an elite. So I found, with the help of my dad, a 2014 wrx limited sedan. Coming from a 1998 328i sedan it was a huge jump.

3 - The tires (a few weeks ago) hit some construction. One of the tires had a nail in the side-board. With the cold and snow coming up soon, I figured I would have them summer stock tires swapped out with all-season tires. This was done this morning. My tires are in the garage (for sale) and I'm driving around in my new all-season tires. Loving every moment.

4 - I asked about the washer fluid because with my old BMW (God bless her soul), I always used a specific type of windshield washer fluid that didn't freeze when temperatures fluctuated between too cold and too hot. Sorry if I came across like a dumby asking about this earlier.

5 - Thank you for clearing up the window question. My brother's Camry (2006 or 2008 I believe) has all four windows open/close automatically. Same in my 1998 BMW when I used to own it.

Well like I said man not trying to be rude or anything just odd questions, that's sucks about your tires though and that clears up that issue. As far as the fluid, I drove an Audi before I got my wrx and I know it took moon water in the radiator and bull urine in the brakes so I get weird fluids but as I stated open that manual you will find almost every answer you need in there, for the odd/one time/weird/noises/squeaks/is this normal questions that's what were here for. Glad to have you and look forward to helping you in anyway we can. Also post a few pictures of your new ride we love pictures

With snow, nothing beats winter tires. As in not all seasons. All seasons will work, yes, but it is a night and day difference between All Seasons and snow tires.

To answer your window question; Yes, that is how it is supposed to be. The auto scroll feature is only on the driver's side. All three other windows you have to hold the window button up or down. Just how this car is, and I don't believe there is a way to fix that.
