Transmission failure on 2016 wrx?

Hi everyone!

I have a 2016 WRX with an automatic CVT transmission and 79k miles. While driving yesterday up a mountain road my RPM's suddenly increased, check engine light turned on and the car had troubles going uphill. I pulled over, looked for any dripping oil/fluids and couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. When I tried to put the car back in drive, the car would not move forward. I used my OBD2 scanner and the codes I pulled are P0700 and P0841, however, transmission fluid levels were not low. I had the car towed to a local transmission shop, but they haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

Anyone else experience this? Have any suggestions of what to do? Really hoping I don't have to pay $6k+ for a new transmission...

Thanks y'all.

I know several people who have smoked cvt transmissions not just in the wrx. There are a few things it could be, if the hill was steep enough it could have pooled fluid somewhere funny. Or you could have smoked it with hard driving. Maybe a sensor.

Is the car modified? Try changing the fluid

Thanks for the response XJman,

Car is bone stock. Thanks for the suggestions, I'm really hoping its a sensor issue causing the car to go into some kind of safe mode? If it does need a new trans, whats your opinion on putting a used one in? Seen some relatively low mileage trans for about half the cost of new.

Hello,
Was your problem resolved with the secondary pressure sensor replacement or with the replacement of an electrical harness?
Thank you for your kind feedback

Good day Gents,
Please need your kind help and feedback on this OBD2 read P0841 Error Code, on my daily 2015 WRX CVT TR690, with 60KMiles as of July 2024.

Quick history:
1- Got the error back in June 2022, 47Kmiles. Replaced my CVTF with High Torque F, replaced new strainer and levelled according to technical subi with learning procedure... all done at the subi dealership.

2- Then in 2023, Got the error back. Reviewed the TSB for error code P0841, and decided to go with the cheap fast solution to replace the secondary pressure switch at the dealership.
This has resolved the matter until...

3- July 2024, Got the error back this past week on 2 different occasions:
First: After a 60mph highway cruise of 45 min, when put the car to stop.
Second: After a 60 min drive in the city at low speed with many stops and starts,
Got the AT Temp Light indicator flashing on Dash with Check Engine Light and Cruise control flashing.

I was monitoring my CVTF Temp using the OBD2 reader and the Torque App,
and it was normal at 201F, same like the engine oil Temp. Engine coolant Temp was Normal at 194F.

I have put the car off for a couple of hours, then run a scan, to find Error Code P0841 as well as the P0700 which comes automatically with the P0841.

Following the above, Do you think
I have to replace at this stage the Control Valve Body of the TR690?

To Note that: The car runs smooth most of the times 95%.
The only issue felt is during hot summer times, when accelerating from a 25mph with pedal at 40 to 50%, the car does not wanna go.
So I depress the pedal in order NOT to stress the system...
seems like a solenoid or a switch pressure in a "do not know what electronic mode" ?!?
However, when pedal is pushed above 70%, then seems this is all by passed and the car goes on "a kickdown" mode and move forward.

I have noticed through the past years, that the above indicator flashing never happens during the cold winter times!
and to this end, I was curious and I looked at the new VB 2022 WRX CVT model at the dealership,
and found that the CVTF is equipped with an improved cooling condenser CVT TR690D6BCA a new tag different than mine the TR6906B9BA..
I guess I can always opt for a moshimoto cvtf cooling stack type condenser for 300$ and install it on the CVTF heat exchanger loop.

I am kinda regretting getting a WRX with a CVT, but had no choice with the crazy traffic and a manual.
Wished Subi offered a regular auto type transmission and or the other more expensive DSG rather than a CVT on a high torque WRX!

Thank you All for your feedback, and if you can share any technical docs on the Valve Body. Am interested to see what type of BOSCH solenoid they put on ?
