I just had clutch and flywheel changed by a trusted mechanic. The clutch was oem and the flywheel was a lighter one w/throwout bearing and all crap needed to change it supplied with it. My mechanic said everything went together well and it drove fine (it does). Well I noticed that in all gears when i downshift or let off gas while its in gear i get a loud rattle. I brought it back to him and he had it all day and said he chased the noise all day and couldn't find it, but assured me there was nothing internal wrong. He said I would just have to ignore it. Soooo my question is, does anyone have any clue what this noise could be and would it be rude to bring it back and demand that it be found and fixed before giving my car back to me??? Ive known this guy for about 14 years and he does all the work for me and my family and I've never had a problem with his work so what should I do?? And if things dont go my way is there any legal way of dealing with this?? Im in FL

When the pedal is depressed, the clutch disengages. If the noise goes away when the pedal is depressed, suspect the throw out bearing. Otherwise, suspect a loose heat shield, bracket, or fitting.

Is it possible the throw out bearing is bad if its brand new? I only put maaaybe 400 miles on the clutch and flywheel and they have been doing this since it has been put in. Or is it possible that he put the throw out bearing in wrong; can that be done?? He said everything was tightened and checked all the heat shields. Only other thing I could think of is maybe because of the mobil 1 synthetic gear oil 75 90w?? I dont know, I'm so annoyed at this noise and the only way that i can drive to not hear it is if I shift under or around 2000rpms. errrrrrrgh!!!!

Do your symptoms fit the description of a throw out bearing problem above? If they do, suspect the throw out bearing. If they do not, then dismiss it.

Well I'm going to go back next week and have him look at it again and see what's going on. I'll keep posted what the results are. If I/we cant find anything wrong then I think Ill take it to the dealer and see if they can diagnose it for me, then bring it back to him. What else can I do?? I'll definitely mention the TOB again to him. Thanks. I'm also starting to notice some vibration in the gas pedal. Hmmm

The gearbox and motor are separated to change the clutch of course, so it might be worthwhile to check the mounts for either of them. Also see if it's not a heat shield rattling around.

it is necessary to remove the downpipe in order to install a new clutch. to remove the downpipe you must first remove the heatshields that surround the downpipe. when reinstalling the heatshields it is often difficult to get the small bolts started that secure the heatshields. to diagnose, i would recommend temporarily removing heatshields and driving car to see if the sound is gone. it could also be a loose nut or bolt that secures the downpipe to the turbo. or the bracket that supports the upper heatshield. or the pitchstopper bolts could be loose. you will need to leave the car with your tech for a day or two to give them time to diagnose. each test drive will heat up all the components causing down time between each diagnostic procedure. worst case scenario would be a defective pressure plate, clutch disc, or release (throw-out) bearing. my educated guess would be the lowest, rearward bolt on the passenger side of the upper heatshield. the power steering lines make it somewhat difficult to get to that bolt. good luck and keep us posted.

well I went to mastro subaru today and had a tech look at it. He drove it and said everything mechanically felt fine and sounded fine (except noise of course). The only thing that he could come up with is that it was a case of flywheel chatter which is apparently common with the lighter flywheel. He did inspect the heatshields and everything underneath as well and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I searched on the web for wrx flywheel chatter and this seems to be a common problem. The word "chatter" is a better word than rattle to describe the noise but to me it does sound a bit like a heatshield as well so i will use the advice given and do a bit of scoping around and trying the possible solutions given. Thanks for the help and maybe, just maybe ill get this noise to go away.

Same issue.

I have a 02 WRX stock clutch & Fly. When I am in gear and i let off the throttle, i hear a loud rattling noise...BUT if i pop it in neutral OR hit the gas...the sound goes away. I used to have 05 WRX and it had the exact same sound....i just accepted the fact that its normal sound for WRX's. My clutch is smooth like a hot knife through butter too.

gone??

Well the mystery noise has vanished about 4 days ago. Don't know how or why but I don't even here chatter now and car drives perfect. The only thing that I did to the car is reset the ecu,I doubt that's what made the noise go away but who knows maybe it did. thanks to thoae who tried to diagnose problem for me.
