I have a '02 RS 4EAT, the fuse is for when you have to put a spare (which is smaller than the rest of the wheels), to make it FWD so you don't damage the center differential when you are running different sized wheels/tires. As for running the FWD for an extended period of time, I remember reading somewhere either on wrxforum or nastysocks saying that it will do long term damage to the differential, I'll have to look for the exact post, but that's what I remember off the top of my head.

THANKs! That is one point on the It's bad to do side.

I have to tell ya, I have driven this car about 15 miles in FWD only. It would be desirable to continue to do this, but I'm going to pull the fuse until I know, definitively, that it is safe.

Back to AWD and not surprisingly, I like it better this way.

what if you wired a switch to this fuse. then you could awd launch then flip the switch and turn in to srt4. we can call it the srt boost switch

....but seriously, how bad would it be to change from awd to fwd while WOT?
and how bad would it be to do 1/4 runs with fwd? your not turning very much and i would assume turning(like canyon runs) alot hurts the center diff more then going striaght.

That's interesting, I wonder, since the AWD in the 4EAT is electronically controlled through an electromagnetic clutch, if that would work. Undoubtly I would think that it would be a considerable strain on the tranny. I have not personallly changed my car to FWD, but i would imagine that it would be faster, since AWD has such a big percentage of drivetrain loss. Especially off the line, if you aren't building revs, and there really isn't enough power to overcome the AWD grip at such low RPM's. From a roll, I would be almost certain that it would be faster.

If you lift the front of a wrx off the ground and spin one of the rear wheels, the opposite rear wheel will spin backwards. Won't get too far without significant problems with that one. (Just to keep this real, I haven't verified that this is true either.) Any experts out there?

Hmm my friends WRX got impounded and they towed it with just the front wheels, I didnt seem like either of the rear wheels were dragging though. What kind of damages could thise have caused?

I really didn't have the opportunity to spin the front wheels, but the traction did feel loose. Steering was oddly easier. Acceleration was noticably quicker. The ride was strangely quieter and the vehicle definately felt 'less' stable. Of course, if the disable in fact doesn't work for the Turbo, then these effects were 'placebo' like and I'm just inventing them.
I too gave in and tried this yesterday, I didnt drive it for long but Ive got to say i felt pretty much the same effects as riptex. It did seem like acceleration was maybe a tad slower accelerating from a dig but the 80-95 pull seemed alot smoother and even and didnt seem to crap out at 85 or so like awd does normally. Ofcourse i could just be imagining these things since i read the effects riptex posted, but i pretty much agree with him.

I ended up disabling AWD on my RS today, as my curiousity got the best of me. In my owner's manual, it said that only non-turbo 2.5L models with the 4EAT could do this. In the main fuse box on the right hand side of the engine bay, remove the fuse box lid and under the lid there are 3 extra fuses. The FWD socket (unlabeled) is on the top left hand corner, I'm not sure what the WRX is like but I used a fuse labeled 20 (watts?) and put it in. I started the car and the FWD light came on. While driving the car, I could easily break traction in the front, and there was alot of torque steer. I also brake tached the RPM's up to 2000, and I could easily burnout. Driving though, it was a small difference straight line, the car seemed like it was faster, but it could have been my imagination. At a stop sign while turning and stepping on the gas, the tires chirped quite a bit (then again, I do have a heavy foot) and it seemed like it was just plowing straight. I did not see anything about leaving it FWD in the manual to cause me to be concerned about leaving it like that, but overall, I prefer the AWD better because when in FWD, it does understeer considerably more while applying more throttle through turns. The difference however was really not too noticeable in a straight line. I might want to try and get it dynoed just because I'm very curious as to how disabling the AWD would affect the whp.

My friend bobby just got done putting the fuse in on his 04 forester 2.5 xt. now it does some wicked srt burnouts. Soon as he gets back home he is going to try it on his wrx.

WHAT???
