2023 Rear Plate - two screws???

Hi,

I am still driving on Temporary tags on my new 2023 WRX. Got my real plates from the dealership. Going to be putting them on soon.

When I bought the car, The dealership put on the rear temporary plate with 2 screws, and a dealer plate frame (that worked with 2 screws). I always assumed that four mount points were there.

Today I took off the temporary plate to grab a screw. I was going to use it to go to the hardware store to buy 4 matching stainless screws for my real license plate.

What I discovered surprised me. There were only two mount points for the rear plate. There were two black adhesive cushion strips, on the car, to stop the plate from scraping the car? I guess this works?

But before I just put my real plate on, is there a better solution? Should I put rubber bumpers on the bottom corners of the real plate? I wish it had 4 screw points.........but I at least do not want the plate scratching the car.

Opinions? Thanks,

Just did this as well. I was thinking of getting some thicker foam pads to stick under the plate but for now just bent the edges of my plate away from the car a bit and it seems fine.

My buddy got a rubber mat looking thing you put under your plate, you can try that, but I don't know what that does sitting on your paint for years either.

I've secured mine with just the top 2 screws now for about 5 years and havent noticed any damage. If you want piece of mind you could attach rubber backing to the license plate but as long as you tighten the screws enough shouldnt be a problem.

JBravo-AK I am glad that you are not having a problem. What I am worried about, with 3 kids, is that someone is going to shut the trunk, buy reaching up and pushing on the license plate, or pushing the license plate when the truck is half way down. Thereby pushing the bottom of the plate right into the paint and scratching it.

-------------------------

I am wondering if the DEALER put the two rubber strips that I have on the car, or if Subaru did? I am wondering if I should get those black adhesive strips off the car, and put some kind of rubber bumper or rubber strip on the lower edge of the license plate instead?

-----------------------

I never thought that putting on a rear plate would take this much thought. I have had a lot of cars - and never had one where the back plate attached with only two screws! The other reason I wish it had 4 screws is to better hold my desired license plate frame (which has 4 holes) to the plate.

Oh well. It's not like I am going to be drilling the car. So I will have to give this some thought. Funny - I thought all this time, until today, that 4 screw holes were under the dealership's temporary plate and frame.......

Hi,

I put the silicone frame around the plate, and then put a custom plate frame that I made on top of it.

It is perfect! No way the plate will stratch the car. And it does not rattle at all when opening or shutting the trunk.

Thank you MikeD, for the great suggestion and product link!

Here is a picture of how the plate looks on my awesome de-Badged WRX!
