Subaru has unnecessary confidence in their knock control system apparently.

It is far more aggressive on the FA platform.

Let’s do some math:

Let’s say you average the city/highway EPA estimated 22mpg over a standard 12,000 mile year. You will burn 545.45 gallons of gas.

In my area, premium is usually 40¢ more per gallon than regular gasoline.

So, how much more a year are we spending over the course of a year? $218.18….

And it’s actually probably less than that as regular will diminish some performance.

So over the standard month (assuming we can amortize our mileage evenly) we are talking $18.18 extra in gas each month.

Why are we talking about this? If you cannot afford an extra $20/mo in gas you cannot afford the car.

If only regular is available in your area… It’s your money to buy whatever car you want with, but maybe a turbo 4 cyl shouldn’t be it? Or, your gas station or auto parts store may sell an octane booster you can dump in with every fill up…

Either way…. If you cannot afford to feed this car quality gas in the best octane available in your area you cannot afford to own the car. “Best” octane may vary by region (usually 91-93) and is can vary due to many reasons (such as elevation). It’s so easy (and not expensive) to just put in the best quality… so why not?
