TD0518G, or VF34?

Which is better for the 06 wrx? I want low lag, and obviously more power (300whp or more) on an SSA TMIC. I want it autocrossable so FMIC is out.
The vf39 looks like it is getting discontinued or something so forget it. I'm leaning toward the 18G, but would the vf34 be just as good?
If so then that would be great since its much cheaper $850 vs $1120.
I just wonder about the flow characteristic.

Which one will make the most power?

Which one has the best power delivery (broadest powerband)?

Which has the least lag?

Can you "Cobb" protune a vf34 on an 06wrx?

Anyone man/women enough to answer this? I'm just a boy in the REAL turbo tuning world! Anyone can put on a TBE, and a CobbAP. It takes a real tuner to work a turbo mod.

18G.

VF34 is too small for the 2.5L

I have a VF34, but only a 2.0L

What about a 18G td05 vrs td06? Wouldn't the Td06 be better for the current 2.5 wrx since I think I heard the 18G can fall on it's face at the highend?
Or would that make it too laggy?

yeah, with a 2.5 a tdo6 housing would be better for top end, but he also wants little lag, so a tdo5 isnt a bad choice either..

You might want to consider a 20g turbo as a possibility.

However, If your going with a top mount, I would look at what it flows, and find a turbo in your price range that flows similarly. For a 2.5L I would recomend the 20g td06 or and 18gtd06.

the td05 is a smaller wheel designed for the 2.0l and the td06 is designed for the 2.5l

When it comes to turbos you have to make sacrifices and choose either spool or top end. You can get a turbo that has almost no lag but will fall flat on it face on the top end. On the other side you can get a turbo that has huge top end but lags. Ideally you want to meet in the middle.

Regardless of the turbo you are going to have to accept some lag compared to the stock turbo. You can get whatever turbo you like but you have to take in other considerations like I/C,other supporting mods and other factors like heatsoak etc.

Most importantly it all come down to the tune

I hear ya bro. Would a TD05 be that bad on top end though to warrant a TD06?

Why does Blouch say that they calibrate there standard w/g at 9psi, but you can buy a 19psi one for $120 more? Do they really sell there turbos with a limited w/g like that? If so then is that the case with JSC too, and all the others?

i have an 04 and was trying to decide the same thing but this forum seems to be saying the 18g is no good on the 2.0... does that mean i shouldn't go with the 18g, i planned one vf34 but my buddy with it said i might as well go with 18g so those have beocme my new plans... would i be needing to worry about my trans with the 18g?

I have an 04 myself and if i dont get rid of it i will be getting an 18g.
It all depends on what you want and what your using the car for. The vf34 is a good DD turbo and puts down around 270 give or take a few depending on tune. It is also alot safer on the tranny than the 18g. The 18g on the other hand gives you good midrange and alot more top end than the vf34 and puts you over the 300whp mark easily, usually around 320 or more but at that power level you will need to upgrade the gears to and RA set or PPGs.

Personally I am getting the 18g because it gives the top end power i am looking for and it also gives extra room for tuning because after while i will be used to the power and will want more and all i will have to do is turn up the boost or add meth. inj

Like i stated about its all about the tune in association w the supporting mods.

Just to throw more stuff in the loop, the vf34 is nearly equal to the vf39 thats in the STI so that should give you an idea of how a vf34 would work on your 2.5L. With that said, I would go with the 18g. Whether it be a td05 (great for autox) or td06 (better all around) you'll enjoy it!

I am in the same situation as you when it comes to picking a turbo. I plan on upgrading mine next spring. It is a toss up between the 18 or 20G. I have decided to most likely go with the 18 because I am not looking to make monster power, just around 300awhp. Can anyone tell me where I can buy a TD06-18G. Everywhere I look there are only TD05's

On this page from rallysportdirect you can choose the 18G option. I am just trying to figure out if this is a TD05 or TD06, I think it may be the TD-06 because the other 18 g's I see flow 590CFM as opposed to this one that flows 605cfm. I can't wait for this spring, My rex is gettin a lot of goodies. I will prolly start buying some things within the next month or two.

thanks for the info guys.. preciate it... im gna try and go with 18g buti have to make sure that i'll b able to afford the geras or whatnot when the time comes... also, will the new AP be enuf of a tune with an 18g?

I would definitely save for gears. If your car is a DD then you could install and tune but either get a mild tune or be very gentle on the tranny.

The V1 AP does have an 18g map so I would assume that the V2AP does as well but it is only an OTS map and must meet the specific requirements. If you do not, then you will need a ProTune, which I would strongly suggest regardless. Especially since I suggest running a FMIC, which the AP doesnt support.

If you have any other question or need help, I will be glad to help to the best of my ability.

Merry Christmas
