JDM STi Headlights - CC-B Harness vs. Scoobymods Wiring

I bought some JDM STi RHD headlights for my '02 WRX. I also bought the wiring harnesses that are sold by CC-B.com. After receiving the harnesses, I started researching the wiring itself, since my OEM connectors were cut off and do not have enough loose wire to be re-attached to the car. That means I've had to cut off the OEM-matching socket from the CC-B harnesses.

Now, it seems as if the CC-B and Scoobymods.com instructions contradict each other when it comes to the low beam wiring.

CC-B tells you to connect the black loose wire of their harness to the black wire of the low beam, and the green loose wire of the harness to the green wire of the low beam. First off, the two loose wires on the harness are blue and green, not black and green. By connecting the wires this way, the green wire from the low beam would ultimately attach to the blue (w/ white stripe) wire of the passenger side OEM connector and the black wire would ultimately connect to the yellow (w/ red stripe) wire of the passenger side OEM connector.

According to Scoobymods, low beam positive wire is green, and should be attached to the yellow (w/ red stripe) wire. The low beam negative wire is black, and should connect to the blue (w/ white stripe) wire. This is for the passenger side only. The OEM wires are different colors on the driver's side, but once I figure out who's right, then I can figure out what needs to be done on that side.

So far, I have the OEM-matching socket cut off of the passenger side harness, and the wires are prepared to connect like this:

High beam outside wire to OEM red.
High beam inside wire to OEM blue (w/ white stripe).
Low beam black wire to OEM blue (w/ white stripe).
Low beam green wire to OEM yellow (w/ red stripe).

So the big question is, who do I trust? I'm leaning towards Scoobymods because the CC-B picture shows a pink wire attached to the OEM-matching socket, with no pink wire coming out the other side. There is no pink wire on my harness, and of course the two loose wires are green and blue instead of green and black.

Below is a link to the Scoobymods.com tutorial, and a picture of CC-B's instructions.

Also, I've got a couple of quick tips for headlight wiring, in case you don't know. Radio Shack sells soldering tape, which are these little bits of solder that can be wrapped around two wires and melted on with a lighter. They also have self-fusing silicone tape, which sticks only to itself, and seems like it would seal a soldered connection much better than electrical tape. Both things are less than $3.

By the way, why do I feel like I've paid $45.00 plus shipping for two 9005 connectors?

P.P.S. Even though I'm leaning toward Scoobymods, their instructions are absolutely chock full of typos and errors. For the driver's side, the red with blue stripe wire is referred to both as the shared positive and the shared negative.

Picture Time

I've numbered the relevant wires on my lights. Which number goes with which wire on the car?

Passenger Side:

1. High beam outside
2. High beam inside
3. Low beam black
4. Low beam green

Thanks Peter. Anyone else know what where the wires go, without having to go out to their car?

By the way Peter, you should start a thread in Exterior and Appearance about your spoiler. I know that a lot of people are interested in that one, but no one knows where to get it or how much it is.

If you are trying to tap into the OEM harness from the car, that is a different bird, but I can do this too. It will require me getting off my lazy behind to look. (already did for a friend who didn't have a plug and play).
This is exactly what I need. I've done so much searching that I can't take it anymore. Ya know how many times Nabisco has told me that you can only search once every thirty seconds?

Anyway, I'm thoroughly frustrated, because I don't understand what the difference between positive and negative is, and how they relate to a switched ground.

Basically, I am desperate to know what color wires on the car attach to each of the numbered headlight wires (see my pics above). This should be easy to find out, even for people who have wiring harnesses on their STi headlights.

I will Paypal $10 to the first person who gives me this information in an accurate, yet simple and non-convoluted format.

P.S. I'd prefer if people focused on their non-HID STi's, which is what I have.

So what you're saying is...?

Driver side headlight:
1. High beam outside to red w/ blue stripe
2. High beam inside to red
3. Low beam black to red
4. Low beam green to yellow w/ red stripe

Passenger side headlight:
5. High beam outside to blue w/ white stripe
6. High beam inside to red
7. Low beam black to red
8. Low beam green to yellow w/ red stripe

This seems to contradict the Scoobymods directions. See below...

The headlight wires are color-coded differently on each side of the car. The connector for the turn signal plugs right in. Therefore, all you have to do is wire the high and low beams. The 9005 connector is for the high beams. Let's start with the passenger side. Wire the high beam positive (red wire) to the wire that is closer to the out side of the car when plugged into the headlight. Wire the Neg. (blue wire) to the other connector that is closer to the inside of the car. Also wire the blue wire to the low beam neg. (black wire) Then wire the low beam positive lead (yellow wire) to the low beam positive on the light (green wire). Tape up the connections. Now the driver's side. Wire the outside wire from the 9005 connector to the high beam positive lead (red wire). Inside wire goes to the shared negative (red with blue stripe). Shared negative also wires to the black on the low beam connector. And the low beam positive lead (yellow with red stripe) to the positive on the light (green wire). Tape up the connections. Replace the battery. Test the lights. Then bolt them into the stock locations. Replace the grille inserts. Replace the grille.

WIRING APPENDIX

Passenger side:
High Beam Positive is RED
Low Beam Positive is YELLOW W/ RED STRIPE
Shared Negative is BLUE W/ WHITE STRIPE

Drivers side:
High Beam Positive is RED
Low Beam Positive is YELLOW W/ RED STRIPE
Shared Negative is RED W/ BLUE STRIPE

I really appreciate the help that everyone is giving, but the $10 is still going to the first person who looks at the actual wiring of their non-HID JDM STi headlights, and posts the details in the format that I used at the top of this post.

Heres a pic of the wiring schematic for the headlights.
Okay, I'm starting to get this, but things continue to contradict each other. One wire from each high and low beam will connect to a shared wire. Your post states that it would be the red wire on both sides of the car.

Left headlight:
1. High beam outside RL(2)
2. High beam inside R(1)
3. Low beam black R(1)
4. Low beam green YR(3)

Right headlight:
5. High beam outside LW(2)
6. High beam inside R(1)
7. Low beam black R(1)
8. Low beam green YR(3)

According to the diagram, the shared wire looks to be blue w/ white stripe on the right headlight, and red w/ blue stripe on the left headlight. That seems to go along with Scoobymods, and the switched grounds appear to coincide as well.

If you are correct about the halogen lights being polarity insensitive, I think I'm good to go at this point. On each headlight, I'm prepared to connect one wire from the low beam to yellow w/ red stripe, and one wire from the high beam to red. One wire from each beam of the driver's side headlight will go to red w/ blue stripe, and one wire from each beam of the passenger's side headlight will go to blue w/ white stripe.

I've got my fingers crossed, because I don't feel like replacing any fuses! ;)

Thanks for your help.

The UK300's are still installed in my car, which is not back from the shop yet. I've got crank sensor problems now. I suspect that they tell you to remove the battery in order to get closer to the headlight wiring.

Guys,

Once this is all sorted out, please remind me to consolidate this thread and make it a sticky. We've got a lot of useful HID and non-HID information so far.
