Hybrid Engine..... Whats Required?

Hey, i've done some searching and got a lot of different answers so figured i'd make my own thread....
I have a 2004 WRX Wagon (Stock) /w 2.0L.
I'm wanting to buy a EJ257 and just use my rex's heads.

What is REQUIRED to do this?

Like I mean a must have to make it run. I have a rebuilt turbo to run extra boost.

But i'm trying to be as cheap as possible

So whats a MUST. to run correctly

Also, whats something I should do later.

Thanks!
John

My hybrid project was just completed, so I can relate to what you want. Having said that, we need to know what it is that you're trying to accomplish.

Also, given that the dent in my bank account is fresh, I have to wince a bit at the idea of a "hybrid build on the cheap". Will you be doing all of the work yourself? That would help a bit.

What turbocharger do you have that you want to use on the build? If it's the small turbo that came on your 2.0, it won't really be useful with the EJ25.

My Goal is to have an engine that just works right now, that I can upgrade later.... I'd like at least as much power as it use to have. (with the 2.0L)

Anything that is not needed for it to run at what my 2.0L ran out is not needed right now. I can/will do that later. I'm broke right now :) but without an engine i'm trying to skip a step for later by just doing the EJ257.

Right now I Do Have the small turbo that comes stock on the 04 wrx. But it's been rebuilt to do double boost? From what i'm told.

EVERYTHING is stock except that.

I'm not doing the work myself but have an extremely cheap mechanic (that works on subs) doing it.

So i'm just curious what's needed right now to make it run (daily driver)

And what's needed later to increase performance while still keeping it reliable. :)

OOOh! and my REx's engine is DEAD. FYI

Ah, didn't know the part about your engine being dead. That changes things a bit.

Just remember that you will need a tune to make the hybrid work when you're done. If you then add hardware later (bigger turbo, IC, etc), then you'll need another tune.

Also, I don't know about the double boost on the stock turbo thing, I don't think you'll want to make much higher boost levels with a stock uppipe/downpipe on the car.

sorry not trying to be rude, but you didn't answer my question -.-

So all I need is to bolt on the EJ257 and a tune?

No Head gasket, fuel pump, camshaft, or any of that required?

All that stuff is extra and can be later?

Will just a tune with the EJ257 produce more power then when it was stock?

I'm on my 3rd hybrid build.

Head gasket, fuel pump, camshaft, or any of that required?
Yes, yes, and HIGHLY recommended (along with the rest of the valvetrain). You will need injectors as well. And as mentioned, a tune. It's a good idea to replace the normal stuff for a new engine as well such as water pump and timing belt. I also recommend that your check the clearances on everything in the heads as well and if need be replace anything that's worn.

Will just a tune with the EJ257 produce more power then when it was stock?
Not particularly. You will gain maybe a few hp but you will produce more low end torque. However your turbo will run out of breathe sooner because it's just too small for the motor. What exactly is done to it? I will tell you know it hasn't been "rebuilt for double boost".

You're right, I totally neglected your question! Sorry. :rotfl:

I'll dig up the invoice for my build (I didn't do the work myself) and list out what they had to buy for you. There are also some good threads on Nasioc about the subject.

Yeah i'd really appreciate it.. Cause i'm just wanting whats required right now.... I JUST WANT A CAR

also i've looked in the forums and searched and there's a crap load of different answers of what people say is a MUST but other people say isn't and it's all confusing -.-

Highlights of my invoice include:

EJ25 shortblock
OEM Engine overhaul kit OEM 10105AA590
ARP EJ20/EJ25 Head stud kit

That excludes all the performance-oriented stuff that was purchased, plus they also provided all new gasketry while they were in there. (header/uppipe, uppipe/turbo, downpipe) as well as my fuel filter.

Also, this excludes head work that was done, and a new timing belt. If your 2.0 was anywhere close to needing a new timing belt, you may want to consider that as well while everything's apart.

I'm not even really sure what was done. It was rebuilt and they redid the turbowheel a certain way or some **** like that -.- I don't even know.

But hey can the camshaft and valvetrain wait?
can I do that later when i have a little bit more money :)
cause i'm broke.

or is it A MUST

I don't mind paying later

how will it run with just the head gasket and fuel pump changed?

and someone at NASIOC told me all i needed was
1. 2.5 block
2. 100mm .051 head gasket
3. water pump
4. and tune

This is the ShortBlock I'm looking at:
SUBARU 2004 to 2006 STI EJ257 SHORT BLOCK ENGINE:eBay Motors (item 300340105981 end time Aug-24-09 05:56:58 PDT)

i'm stupid it says it comes with oil pump/timing belt but it says 2008 sti....... I'm confused does this mean that it won't work for my 2004 WRX ?

and if thats all good i'll have to buy this head gasket, fuel pump and get a tune?
