Gearbox and Centre diff noises

I have a 04 wrx hatch, about a month ago i started to hear a whining noise. I thought it was a wheel bearing but the noise started to get really bad. Then another noise came into play about two weeks ago along with the whining, when i release the gas it sounds like there's something loose in the gearbox.
I took the car tothe mechanic he thought it my rear diff, took it to a diff specialist, he said that it was a bearing in the diff, he wasn't sure if it was front or back. I've just come back from a japanese gearbox specialist he says that there is a bearing/washer between the gearbox and centre diff that has shredded and is causing these noises.

Has anyone had or have a simillar problem or know what the problem might be??

I have a moly flywheel, and kevlar clutch installed. My transmission makes loud whining with a bit of rattle to it noises. It's been doing that for years before the clutch install. It's probably not the throw out bearing (changed it), and I've been told the new flywheel will make more noises so I've learned to ignore it.

If you have not modified anything then something probably broke on yours. A tip I've learned when getting a diagnosis is to never tell the tech what you suspect the problem is, especially if it is a second opinion.

I know what it is! I had the same thing so i put it up on a Lift and put it in gear. Its the front axle bearings that are in the dif that whin..the get dry and wore out. If you can replace those you are good to go. It wont hurt to drive it, just annoying.
I have the same problem on a 2004 wrx. When I let up on the gas I hear a whining sound. I thought it was coming from the center diff. The first thought was a bad bearing in the trans.
Still cant pinpoint it. I asked the subaru dealer, he suggested a bad bearing.

The WRX gearbox from my experience and many other testimonials, all make the whining noise. Mines made the noise since i got it, and Ive heard the same noise in other WRXs. Typically heard when let off the gas, but also when accelerating.
If shifting is good, fluids are full and clean, and the drivetrain is smooth I wouldnt worry.

Hey all. I have a 2003 wrx 5-speed that has a very distinct whining noise when you let off the throttle and let the car coast whether the shifter is in neutral or in gear. I could only describe the whine as sounding like a bad bearing whine but i can feel the vibration distinctly through the shifter and the sound is coming from under the shifter console. It also is locking up the tires a little when turning the car with the wheel turned all the way left or right but only in a certain spot of the rotation of the wheels.

So I read this awesome thread here READ THIS-->Differential:How To and decided to take a peak inside the transfer case housing at the rear of my transmission and this is the first thing I saw.

As you can see the clip that came out of its locking groove on the back of the viscous coupler and got mangled has been rubbing up against the transfer gears at the back of the transmisson and spinning the clip around in its groove at the same time which as far as I can tell is the problem. Luckily It didn't chip any of the gears at all. I have a 5-speed transmission I took out of my old 03 2.5RS that is stuck in second gear has the same viscous coupler in it so I'll be extremely lucky if this is what my problem is. I just wanted to share my findings so anyone who has a similar noise might know where and what to look for.

just an update on my whining noise problem. it still made the whining noise after fixing the center diff clip that was bent so i took it to my local subaru dealership. they took the tranny out and split it open and they found a bad roller bearing in the transmission on one of the 2 main shafts. this was causing my whining noise upon decceleration or letting of the gas in any gear, in nuetral, at any speed, or with the clutch in or out. repair tab at subaru was $500 and 3 1/2 days but hey it could've been worse. a used transmission is $1300

Same thing is happening to my 2003 WRX. I just changed the front hub/wheel bearings at a cost of $300 to NOT fix the issue. It only happens when the automobile is hot and has been on the road for a while, so I assumed it was because the bearings had time to heat up and start to whine. So do we have a definitive answer as to what this whine under the stick shift is?
