EGT Sensor?

I have just had over £1000 worth of work done on my scoob and about an hour after coming out of the garage the engine management light has come on again!! I took it back and they cleared the code saying it was nothing to worry about and guess what? its come on again....Now they are telling me its the exhaust gas temprature and I will need a new EGT Sensor?

Basically they replaced the headers with some stainless steel ones, a reconditioned Turbo and a OEM O2 sensor now I'm getting told this?

Is this dangerous for my car? could it cause any engine damage and will this EGT sensor solve my problem? and is this garage having me on?

Cheers

Remove the EGT probe and block the hole with a oil pan bolt. Install 2.2K ohm resistor in wiring harness plug for EGT probe.

"My uppipe has an EGT bung, should I plug it or reinstall the stock EGT sensor? There is a chance down the road that EGT probe could burn up and pieces of it could be ingested by the turbo. Plugging it is the best option. You will need a M12x1.25 bolt. They can be tricky to find and many go to auto parts stores and ask for this type of oil drain bolt. True hardware stores are also a good place to find these. You may consider a jam nut if the bolt is too long, or you could trim it down to fit better. High temp thread locking compound is also an option.

What is the CEL fix? 2.2 K Ohm 1/2 watt resistor. These are available at Radio Shack and are usually in stock. $1 buys you 6 of them. You place it in the EGT connector, which is the bottom connector just forward of your passenger side strut tower. It only has two holes, so jam one end of the resistor into each. If you do not use this resistor, you will probably end up with the CEL code P0546 = Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Malfunction (High Input)."

Funny you should say that as when the guy went back inside I had a look at the diagnostics unit and thats exactly what it said 'Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Malfunction' so am I right in guessing that the haven't actually re-attached the EGT sensor and i just need the resistor?

No. Even if the EGT is plugged in it could still cause this due to the catalytic covertor being removed from the up-pipe. Since I have no idea which header you have or if it replaced the factory up-pipe I can only guess. FYI-most Engine Management disables this CEL/DTC.

See here this is the headers that where installed..

I'm also wondering if i should be forking out for an EGT sensor? it went in the garage with a working EGT Sensor so I expect it to come out working...

Is this something that needs sorting quick?

Cheers

It still is working. I don't think you understand how OBDII systems work. If you install a catless downpipe you will get CEL/DTC's a well about a rear catalyst efficiency. Does this mean your rear O2 sensor is no longer working? No. It means you have tampered with the emissions system and the ECU is not happy and knows what you did. Honestly you should be doing a little more research before modding your car. It will save you some heartache. The key work for today is "foresight" ;)

I wasn't looking at modding my car it went in for an mot and they told me it had a cracked uppipe and pointined me to those headers!! now i'm getting EGT problems, so basically trying to find out what to do and whats happened...is it my problem or should the garage be responsible?

Its both your faults. Its your responsibility to be an educated consumer and theirs to have given you more information or made sure there would be no problems. Sounds like they are a bunch of yahoos that don't know Subies. You could have easily just bought a new up-pipe. Easy fix is to do what I posted first. Remove EGT probe, block it off and insert resistor. This is done with pocket change. Or take the car back and discuss it with the shop.

Thanks for the advice, going to need to find a guide as i'm not the best when it comes to cars (as you have already guessed)...

Also I have noticed a knocking/dragging noise from the engine is this related?
