the local subaru dealer wants $1,200 to replace the clutch on my 03 wrx wagon. would an exedy kit from ebay for $200 be a good replacement? i've been told labor should be around $450. so i'd be getting it done for about half the price of the dealer if i went that route. would i need anything else other than the clutch kit? car has 85K miles. thanks in advance

when you replace your clutch you should always replace the flywheel also... the exedy kit is nice for a stock replacement but if you play a little hard sometimes get a stage 2. Its good for all types of driving and when you slip the clutch it wont stink up your car.(as long as its not organic.)

The OE replacement kit he's talking about is perfectly fine for +stage 2 power. "Stage 2" clutches are MUCH more harsh on your transmission than organics. Don't get an agressive clutch unless you really need it. Recommending a 3 puck clutch to someone because they "play hard sometimes" and because "it won't stink when you slip" is pretty unsound advice. For the record, I'm making over 340 ft lbs of tq to the wheels on an organic clutch.

But yes, you will either need to get a new flywheel or have your current one resurfaced.

And $450 is a lot for clutch replacement labor.

You can just get your original flywheel resurfaced. They usually don't have much wear on them. They wear much less than brake rotors, at least with the OEM organic clutch. It'll only be about $20 to resurface it at a machine shop.

Help a noob!

Hey guys, I didn't want to make a new thread so I searched like a good noob. Same year and model as the OP, 85k miles, taken to dealership to replace slipping clutch.

Anyways, I recently went through the same thing as the OP. I told the dealership to call me before replacing the flywheel to make sure that I wasn't going to get ripped off($270+labor).

Well, they called and said it had to be replaced. I said OK and asked them to save it for me.

Problem is, the thing looks fine. The only noticable defect is perhaps some light heat cracking, or maybe some "glazing" (although im not really sure what this is, but it describes the surface quite well)

What recourse do I have with the dealership? I am planning on taking the flywheel back to them and demanding to know why they took it out, but I'd like to be prepared for whatever BS answer they have in store.

As and engineer, I feel like it could have been resurfaced and still be fine as there is no lack of structural integrity. There is no scoring and the surface is completely level.

Help?

There is no spec for resurfacing the factory flywheel (minimum thickness, etc.). Heat cracking is an emergent stress riser that could lead to catastrophic flywheel failure. This could blow apart the bellhousing of the trans and cut your legs off. Granted, I'd say that likelyhood is slim, but is it worth the risk for $270?

You always replace the flywheel when doing a clutch in a WRX. Always, always, always.

If your trans is stock then you want an organic disc. Especially when the car is modified. You need the clutch to be the weak link, because otherwise it will be your trans. Exedy OEM, Exedy Stage 1, or ACT HD Street are the only way to go.
