STi brakes are pricey. Like $200+ per set of pads. The Dealer will not install anything unless it is a genuine Subaru part.

there's a jack in the trunk. and a wrench to get the lugnuts off too.

all you need other than that is a piece of wood to help you compress the pistons and a metric socket set...12mm is all you need I think.

other than that, all you need is some grease for the back of the pads (some pads come with a little packet)

brakes are VERY easy. when you unbolt the caliper, only unbolt ONE side (I think the top is easier) and just loosen the bottom bolt a bit so that the caliper will swing off the rotor...then you can just pull the pads, remove all the clips (if your new pads didn't come with new ones) clean them, grease them, and put them on the new rotors.

Then just wedge the piece of wood into the caliper and use it as a lever to push back the pistons a bit (don't to it too much) drop in the new pads and you're done! bolt the caliper back on and off you go.

the first one might take you about 30 minutes, but once you figure it out, it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes each for the others.

when I did mine, I also installed the SS brake lines and painted my calipers...so it took a bit more time, but if all you're going to do it replace the pads...its VERY easy.

And if you don't want to use a piece of wood to depress the calipers, there's an $8 tool at your local auto parts store that works like a champ!

Not necessarily true. My dealer was very happy to install my after-market pads for me when my Rex was in for service. He was also very happy to charge me $150 for the privilege. My own fault for not asking how much.

Of course, other dealers may have other standards.

Not so. I just saw a dealer put on a very non-Subaru part on an STi the other day.

 

Well when I went to the dealer I got my brake pads done and rotors resurfaced for free.. It was all covered under warranty for the STi

 

the dealer WILL install non-Subaru parts, but you have to request it. You will also most likely have to bring them the part, and I think there's something weird that happens with the warranty on that part. I think the labor is covered (as any auto repair labor would be), but the part itself is not because YOU bought it somewhere and brought it to the dealer...so YOU would have to go deal with the warranty, which is a pain if your car has to sit in a garage while you deal with the vendor, return the part, and wait for a new one.

 

The typical deal for a dealer when they sign their agreement with the manuafacturer is that they only use OEM parts in this case Genuine Subaru Parts. Yes I'm sure you will find a few that ignore that rule.

Try a bigger company like Toyota or Nissan and they will be much harder to find. I think Subaru just doesn't have the ability to keep as tight a leash on their dealers.
