09 sti swap

I'll lay out what I got right now. 99' Rs complete 04 wrx conversion. Only thing in my car that isn't from an 04 wrx is the body and my seats. Running a vf34 blah blah all that good stuff.

Now here's my dilemma. I work at a Subaru dealer. Probably 6 months ago an 09 sti came in with 1200 miles with a spun bearing. Subaru screwed up and didn't put a new hardened crank in. Guy got a complete new engine. Block was destroyed my friend got to keep the heads and he kept the pistons. Next another sti came in with I wanna say a few hundred miles on it with a broken ringland. He got a new shortblock. So basically now he's got a new sti engine he can rebuild.

So I was bsing with him (good friend since elementary school) and was busting his balls telling him I'll take it from him for free. He says I can have it just give him my engine and he'll sell that. I got a big smile on my face naturally.

So now I'm trying to get an estimation of price in my head to see if I can swing this swap and also if I feel like dealing with it. I'm figuring I'll need a full 09 sti harness and ecu. Can anyone think of anything else? I'll be running it on my wrx trans until I can upgrade to ppg's or possibly an sti trans and rear but we'll see. One thing that came to mind would be the immobilizer. Would I need to swap out my ignition? Can't really think of a way around it that I know of. Also it's drive by wire. Would I need a pedal box from an 09 or are there ways around that too? I haven't come across anyone that has done an 09 sti swap so I was trying to think of possible other things that may have changed compared to the earlier sti's.

It sounds like a hook up but I would totally keep what you have if it is working well. I think also the turbo is in a different orientation and the intercooler is different. Basically your going to replace a ton of stuff to fix what isn't broken.

Yeah I'm gonna have to check it out. Pretty sure it's the same. I also won't be running the plastic manifold. I'll be running my intake manifold and wrx ecu with a tune. The part that worried me was getting the full benefit of the avcs heads. I can get my buddy to give me a safe street tune with the avcs inactive then apparently so far I've found with hydra you can wire up the avcs. Still looking into that.

You should see the stuff that gets tossed from SOA never calling them back. The block with the "soft crank" SOA already knew what the problem was so they did not need it back since they already knew the problem. They said to drill the block and keep what other parts we wanted. Some dude took the block for scrap. That car got a complete engine minus the turbo. Came in a nice big wooden box with a stand I use now for dismantling blocks when needed. Very helpful. lol

The other block with the broken ring land our service manager instead of just swapping pistons and possibly dealing with a come back ordered a new short block. Still waiting to see if SOA calls that back but most likely they won't.

Also have a vf43 that was replaced and most likely is still good. lol

Ok I can't keep them straight obviously - good thing I don't have one. So is it STi has the same turbo location 04-09 but the new WRX have the legacy style? Sorry.

Either way I will be rebuilding the engine with better pistons and run the heads, save up and get a stand alone system that can run the avcs. Can't wait this should be fun! I'll take some pictures and probably finally make a build thread from rs, to 2.0rs, then to rsti.

that STi engine looks like an open deck block :( WTF?

Plus wiring is different from the 09 STi vs the 04 WRX... so you'll have to probably get that custom done unless you want to replace the pedal assembly

Right, that was what I was originally thinking. But if I use my intake manifold everything should be fine. And from what I read once I get a hydra stand alone I'm able to activate the avcs. I'd rather have my manifold over the plastic one anyway. lol And if it really was going to be a problem I'd use just the block with my 2.0 heads but looking at it at work today I don't see any problems if I use my intake manifold. Plus I still have a cable throttle.

Sounds like a simple (relatively speaking) hybrid swap.

2.5L EJ257 + 2.0L heads/intake manifold/throttle body/fueling system.

No need to change the ECU/wiring harness, provided all the sensors that are hooked to the block are retained for the 04 ECU. I don't think there are very many of though, and they shouldn't have changed too much anyway.

BTW: The 09 STI doesn't have a plastic intake manifold.

Hmm...I'll have to double check that. Thought he said he had the plastic manifold for it. I'll have to find out where he put it. Might be on top of his box. Either way though I'll have to use mine since I have a throttle cable and the sti manifold doesn't have the bracket for it. I'll just have to port them out a little since it'll be out.
