Synopsis:
I recently had to take my 12WRX into a specialty Subaru shop (sorry - will remain unnamed at this time) for repair services. At the time, I was pretty frustrated, upset and tired so I did not really pay too much attention to the invoices - I just wanted to get things done as these car issues have caused a great and unexpected inconvenience. Long story short, I reviewed the invoices a few days later, after having already signed off on and paid them, and noticed the shop charged me +$430.29 in parts alone (before tax and not including labor). I say + because I shopped around, afterward, for these exact parts and found all of them totaling less than what the shop charged. Look at the break down below:

Shop charges:
Exedy Stage 1 clutch kit: part 15-804 - $741.86

OEM flywheel: part 12342 AA090 - $374.99

Motul 8100 X-cess 5W40 Synthetic Motor Oil: part 337465023827 - $16.28 for 1.5 quarts

OEM Fuel Filter: part 42072 AG140 - $85.71

ID1050X x1 set of 4: part 1050.48.11.WRX.4 - $580.50

Cobb Flex Fuel Package: part 315F03 - $800

AEM 320 Fuel Pump: part 50-1215 - $150

Total: $2,749.34

Don't get me wrong. I'm not hating on the shop. I'm just trying to understand shop pricing and how it works. I emailed and called the shop multiple times these past couple of days (even left a voicemail) but have not received any responses. It's now the weekend and the shop is closed so I may never get an answer unless I head back up to the shop and talk with them in person. I don't want to escalate this, I just want an explanation. I understand that I've already signed for the invoices and paid them off so the chances of any adjustments are out the window. I'm just looking for input and experiences from any other owners.

Thanks in advance!

Whoa whoa whoa. Calm down. I did not say that I was mad at the shop. I'm asking for an explanation of charges. I could care less over a couple dollars but when it's around a $400 dollars difference I would at least like to understand how shop pricing works. As I said, at this point, I'm only looking for input and experiences. This is the first time in 22 years that I've had to use a shop for repair services on my car so I take it I'm just out the loop as to how shop prices work.

It all depends on their distributor, the rate they get off the quantities they buy, and if there is a premium required by the store to be charged by the part manufacturer that places like Amazon don't compete with.

I wasn't being rude. I'm just letting you know this is 2017, shopping at brick and mortar stores is typically more expensive because they pay more overhead per sale.

I can get parts cheaper on my own and bring them to my shop, but there isn't warranty on the work done. By letting my mechanic source the parts, he provides a warranty on the parts/labor (sometimes even above what the manufacturer will).

Thanks for the input. Quick question though. The invoice I received from the shop states "No warranty is offered on all parts and materials used in repairs." I take it this means the shop will not support the failure of the parts they put in. There is no mention of warranting labor so does that mean I don't have warranty coverage on their labor either?

Does this mean I would need to go through the manufacture for warranty claims and not the shop, as if I was the one that bought the part directly from the manufacture?

You'll need to talk with the shop.

I'm not surprised . . . most every garage, shop, etc. has to deal with economy of scale (i.e. if you are a large company buying thousands of Part X to turn around and sell on line you typically get a price break vs. a company buying just a few hundred of the same part), often dealing with a single source (or a few) sources for the majority of parts (meaning some parts will not be as cheap) vs. shopping around to individual sources for the absolute best price -- not to mention that this often means a "middle man" is involved vs. direct sales so you figure in the increased cost here . . . and honestly shops typically charge a bit extra for the parts anyways as part of the cost of doing business and the convenience.
