My last and final post about this stupid Harmon Kardon system in 18’ WRX

I’ve had enough trying to find a cheap way to make the car audio sound good. I realized I’ve already pretty much replaced all the speakers anyways (well I have the front components in the box, but you get what I’m saying) so eff it. I’m going to just get a new head unit, and rip that stupid HK amp out and brutally beat it with a bat. Just a few questions before I commit and start ordering. I’d rather have all the info now so I can order everything at once.

1.) So since I’ll be getting an aftermarket head unit(haven’t decided on Sony/Pioneer or get an Android unit. But regardless, since the factory HU is coming out I can now get rid of the HK Amp, and won’t need to bypass anything correct??

2.) To save myself some labor and headache, can I utilize the OEM speaker wires??? Example, from HU to amp, could I use the factory HU to HK Amp input wires into the input of my amp? And the. For the out, could I reuse the old HK Output wires? Or is it just easier to wire new wires to the amp, but use the existing HK Amp Output speaker wires??

3.) can I now rip STARLINK out? Or does it serve some critical function to have the car working properly?? I could careless about the safety or emergency features of STARLINK. Last thing I want is some lady asking if I’m alright and a bunch of questions whilst dazed from a car accident. If I die… I die.

4.) So I currently have Infinity Reference 3.5” coaxials in the dash, and I picked up some Infinity Primus PR6510CS 2way component set from a Black Friday sale. Now if I want to wire the three as a 3 way set, how would I go about doing this?? Or should I return the Reference 3.5” and I spotted some Infinity Kappa 20MX Midrange component add-ons on sale on Amazon for $99. They come with a bandpass filter, and are specifically made to add onto existing 2 way components. I’ve already checked and it seems like they are “gap” compatible to work with virtually any mid-tier 2 way component set. I think I’m going to return the 3.5” for these. I mean for $99?? The MSRP is usually $199!! And I assume it’ll be easier to wire into the 2 way component since it comes with its own bandpass filter?? So amp wise, then how would I power all these speakers?? I should mention I have a Memphis Mini Mojo 6.5” subwoofer and is powered by its own amp. I wouldn’t need to use the “sub” channel on whatever multi channel amp I get correct?? and I assume when I get the head unit if it has a sub-out I would just re wire from that output, if it doesn’t then I could just bridge the speaker amp to sub amp or vice versa??

5.) 4 channel? 5 channel? 6 channel??? How the fuck do I even wire this. I replaced all speakers including rear. So I’d like to drive all of them off the same amp if possible. So rear coax speakers = 2 channels. How would I wire the front components whether I just go 2 way or decide to go 3 way?? Oh I should mention, I do have a JL Audio 4 channel 300/4 amp that my friend gave me a long time ago. If I can use this, I’m totally okay not doing the 3 way up front btw.

I promise this is my last thread regarding audio on my car. I’m so sick and tired of this Harmon Kardon system just ass fucking me. Speaking of ass fucking, if I go with the idoing android head unit… do I still need to get the Harmon Kardon canbus decoder box?? Or can I just skip that since I technically won’t be using the HK amp/system anymore??

Thanks I’m advanced.

I would love to have good answers but honestly I've even tried my best to Google the hell out of it for you and have no luck.

The only advice I have is I prefer pioneer radios.
haha thanks man. Trust me on the google searching. I’ve been researching this for WEEKS. I’m at the point where I’m rereading threads I’ve already read through just in case I missed anything. Fortunately seems the HK systems although wiring color maybe different, overall system since the 2012 or 2013 Legacy/Outback/Forester/etc HK systems are setup quite similarly.
Front Dash: Either Full Range or midrange drivers, but some say it’s a full range signal, and others say it’s passed only to play mids and highs at the HK amp. This mismatch of cluster fuck info is what’s frustrating.
front doors: midwoofer (this is deff shared through all Subaru/HK systems even using the same speaker, and deff low passed at HK amp and not wired parallel to dash speakers like on the non HK systems.
Rear doors: coaxial, but for some reason high passed and only plays highs? No mids? No lows? Not sure why even add a coaxial speaker then.
subwoofer: some lame dual voice sub

now specs on all this is what’s really hard to find. Like ohms and all that. Which is why I just got so frustrated and im ripping the HKunit out. Lmao Thanks for the effort tho. :)

First and foremost reach out to autoharnesshouse they are the go to source for writing, adapters and integration on our cars. They have great customer support and i know they can assist you with the radio replacement.

Radio wise I had an Android unit and now have a Kenwood with maestro rr. ONLY reason i changed out the Android was cuz I'm picky and wanted to be able to do wireless Android Auto and could only listen to Android Auto audio when I'm in Android Auto mode. For example I couldn't listen to the radio or the usb drive while using Android Auto at the same time. If that's something you don't care about by so means get the Android unit. It's gorgeous and had tons of features and capability. You won't be disappointed with it. Love my 4 year old Kenwood currently, The only downside was the downgrade in screen size and quality.

Dump the factory radio and you'll be golden. Reach out to autoharnesshouse and let us know how it's going. Been out of touch lately but sounds like your a bit frustrated, i get it and so was i until i pulled my radio.

ahh we meet again mister THX. :)

ahh I forgot about them and there’s another website that starts with ae. I just remember the ae because it reminded me of the ae86 lmao. But I’ll deff reach out, not sure why my stubborn ass was so adamant on figuring this all out on my own. Hahaha.

as for the HU… can you watch YouTube videos on that HU? I had a Pioneer HU and Alpine a while ago in a different car and I remember the Pioneer unit being able to play YouTube but it was super low res and jank. Like you had to use Pioneer’s app, to then open YouTube via what looked to be old school Android web browser. It couldn’t even encode the video properly so 50% of the video was just blocks. LOL. I’m sure things have gotten a lot better, but I do DoorDash on the side when I have nothing to do. So I wanted the Android head unit mainly to watch YouTube videos during downtimes while waiting in the car. And Iprobably won’t use Apple Carplay/Android Auto as much. Since for music I plan on just using the Spotify app. Do all these units have a SIM card slots?? Or only some? Also, is it limited to 4g only? Or are there 5g HU’s now? I’ll probably open a Verizon tablet line for the HU so I don’t have to pair my phone every time, and it can just be its own standalone system with Spotify. Anyways. I guess since the HK adapter is only $35. I’ll pick it up. iDoing just revamped their android HU so they now have a physical volume and tuner dial!!! Same 9” screen as well. Seeing that for me super excited. Still debating on getting a floating screen or integrated. 🤔

Being an Android tablet basically anything you can run on a tablet you can run on the head units. If i recall correctly they have 1 or even 2 sim card slots. You'd need an account for that additional card if you choose to use it. Another option is to hotspot to the head unit from your phone to provide it the connection needed to stream YouTube etc. Depending on your connection that will work or not depending on the hotspot speed of course. Not sure if 5g but yes 4g is supported. I would reach out to them to be sure that the Verizon bands will work sufficiently with the SIM card slots. As for floating screen i would only choose that if i had no option as it will block the AC vents pretty significantly IMO.
