Hypothetically they meet emissions regulations while offering better exhaust performance. They work in places where they are part of the original engine management and engine design.

In practice they are not perfect although there are a few companies working to make them 100% EPA compliant now that the wording has been updated.

What is the P0420 code?
The P0420 code is a generic powertrain code that indicates a problem with the catalytic converter in the exhaust system. It specifically refers to a “Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold” in Bank 1. Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine where the number 1 cylinder is located.

When the OBD system detects that the catalytic converter is not functioning efficiently, it triggers the P0420 code. This usually happens when the converter is not able to reduce harmful emissions to the required levels.

Possible causes of the P0420 code
There are several potential causes for the P0420 code in Subaru vehicles. These include:

  • A faulty catalytic converter
  • Oxygen sensor malfunction
  • Exhaust leaks
  • Fuel injector issues
  • Engine misfire
It is important to note that the P0420 code does not necessarily mean that the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. It is possible that the issue lies with one of the other components mentioned above.
