i just bought the car recently... after a couple days of driving, one day while cruising on the freeway the check engine light suddenly turns on. I was alarmed at first, but nothing seemed to be critical at the moment. I stop driving the car and the next day I go to autozone to pull the code. P0402.

As most of us know, this is the catalyst below threshold bank 1. The car has a downpipe and exhaust, so I do not have any of the factory catalytic's. The people at autozone told me I needed to replace the o2 sensor.... they said the car might be running rich and i should change it soon.

Everyone tells me they smell a lot of gas when they are behind me. (car was probably at 3-4k rpms)

im not sure what to do.
should i ignore it becuz i have an aftermarket exhaust
should i replace the o2 sensor (for $200)
should i just drive the car at low-engine speed until i can CONFIRM what the problem is

i did plenty of searching, but i am not sure what to do since i am suspecting that i am running rather rich.
the check engline light stays on solid.

it is an hks downpipe and an apex exhaust.
2002 subaru wrx sedan with 56,000 miles.
only other mod is a HKS ssq BOV

any input is appreciated.

get an cobb accessport and call it a day. You will get significant HP gains and no cel. Kill two birds with one cobb.
