I have a friend of mine that has an 06 WRX that he wants to drop a good penny into and make it 500hp+. since I only have experience with VW's I was hoping you guys could help me out.

based on my knowledge if he pieces together a kit he's going to need the turbo, ex manifold, downpipe, FMIC, injectors, software, rods, (already has a BOV), and all the coolant/oil lines for the turbo.

  1. my first question is what turbo is gonna get him to that range, im looking at a garrett gt3076 for him and some 850cc injectors.
  2. what company should i get software from? does cobb have a file for 850cc's?
  3. are stock internals gonna hold 500+ hp on a wrx? cause i know rods on my car are gonna snap at 350+ but subies might be forged and stronger to start with.
  4. will i need anything else like a FMIC or headspacer or MBC?
  5. hes got a downpipe that bolts up to his stock turbo, will that work with a 3076?

let me know if there is anything you guys would add to that list...

thanks in advance, Drew

he says he wants to race out at the track and do some drag races too. would 400 be a more realistic goal?

and do you really mean 40K or 4K?

hes completely loaded and so i don't think money is gonna be an issue for him. so i at least had him get a goal down of what he wants to achieve.

40k subarus are expensive to build. I have 30 into mine and pushing 356. Just need bigger turbo and a tune.

haha thanks for the info. i'll have him read up and make him do some homework for once, i think after reading that he should shoot for 325 hp and that is it.

im coming from an FWD world where 400 whp is really only going to be beneficial on the highway, cause we all know anything over 250 at the line is just gonna spin the tires..

sorry for being the guy that just posts the same **** over and over again. i searched around a bit and didnt see any info that i needed so again i apologize.

I’m about 12 years late lol. But I had a 04 wrx limited, trim spec doesn’t matter, but I got it at stage 2. Which is very basic. Full invidious exhaust, Cobb short ram intake, gfb blow off, Cobb v3 access port. Pretty basic made like 250-60 ish very basic. Got rid of the access port bullshit which is only good for people who don’t want to turn a wrench, or to hold multiple other tunes. Upgraded stock turbo to legacy 2.5 turbo, sti pink injectors, bigger fuel pump, sti intercooler, and got it pro tuned and dyno’d at 341hp and 295 tq. For stock driveline and 5 speed keeping torque around 295 is very important to not blow trans. If makin 341 hp by spending only 1k on parts, 1k on tune
I don’t see making 500+ being extremely difficult. I sold it for 8k and picked up a 2003 gls that made 560hp (dynod) for 7900 the same day. Pretty obvious awd 100% over takes fwd. in my gls 1-2 would just spin from a line. 250 will not spin an awd at line unless you rape your clutch. But with that said 40k is not needed for 500hp. My gls ($7900$) made 560, had Complete forged internals, aeb head, Garrett 80mil and all the other top heavy hitting parts and lasted me 7000 miles and is still going with new owner. 40k is not needed to have 500hp and reliable. All about driver

His original goal will require a complex manner of engine building, which is why everything so expensive. Not to mention the transmission build he would need as well. The estimate I gave includes labor, which I'm making the assumption is needed because you're the one having to do the research instead of him. ;)

400 whp is much cheaper. However stuff will still break, relatively often.

Do you know what he has on his car aside from a BoV? If nothing much, 400-500 whp will be a bit too much for him to handle. Hahaha!

for the OP

1.) my first question is what turbo is gonna get him to that range, im looking at a garrett gt3076 for him and some 850cc injectors.
GT35 if he wants a solid 500whp turbo. 850cc will handle that much power.
2.) what company should i get software from? does cobb have a file for 850cc's?
500whp would need a custom tune, not just a reflash.
3.) are stock internals gonna hold 500+ hp on a wrx? cause i know rods on my car are gonna snap at 350+ but subies might be forged and stronger to start with.
Maybe for a little while, but not reliably. Build the motor.
4.) will i need anything else like a FMIC or headspacer or MBC?
FMIC definitely, heads are fine, MBC or EBC may be necessary depending on what your tuner prefers.
5.) hes got a downpipe that bolts up to his stock turbo, will that work with a 3076?
nope, you will need a specific downpipe.

There doing things cheap.. and doing things right.

Would it be possible to do a 500whp build for about 8grand?

Yes....

Would it last? No.

30k+ would be more in the ballpark.

I never said it couldn't be done. But properly, that's another matter. I could make 500 whp on my current motor, but it would be unwise on my part.

[edit] I see meth was used as well, which personally I consider cheating as it's a temporary power adder. :(

I know who JR is. I also know enough about him he wouldn't have a customer put something on his car that subarus engine management strategy doesn't support, unless he is slipping. Hell Dom peddles the 4cyl cooling mod these days.

Anyway back to the beginning. Your car does not make 500awhp. Your price is right for the work you have and is a reminder that you are spending twice the price of the car new or more to make that kind of power.

When it does make 500awhp post the build list in a thread. This is a never ending quest for people for some reason want to go after.

Maybe, there is no indication of that in the list of things he is doing. I can only respond to the information provided I've been burnt assuming in the past.
