I want to order something new while the trade-in for used cars remains ridiculously high. I bought mine for $40,000 and I can now trade it realistically for $35,000. As important, I want something with a warranty. The WRX, and just about everything else, is, or at least seems, more comfortable to live with. I have a new job with a 30 minute commute. It's not much, but I want something comfortable.

The dozen times I've prices a limited WRX, it has come to right at $40,000 with absolutely everything I want on it, at dealership cost. Essentially, for around $5,000 I can have a new warrantied car for another five years. I've never owed on my STI, so essentially it's just dipping into our checking account for a clean slate. Gas mileage is also in the 'not very good' category, which is better than the 'terrible by 2018 standards' category.

I like the fender arches on black and gray. Not so much on anything else.

My acquaintance still says he can secure a Type-R for me, which they're said to have in Spring. I'm first on their list. Just because it is a Type-R, and there will be limited chances to buy something that special with ICE in the very near future, I would strongly consider it at the $5,000 markup he specified. This is considering with a higher trim level 2023 STI we most certainly would have purchased, we anticipated a $45,000 cost. (What a shame) But, when I confirmed the markup again, he changed it from "$5,000-$10,000." OK dude... I see where this is going.

It's a shame I think the GR Corolla isn't attractive in Core form, and it doesn't even come with an armrest. The circuit trim I would be interested in will be virtually unavailable. There are already pre-order lists, and every dealership is said to be delivered one. At the $44,000 cost, I would imagine markup would put it well over $50,000.

With even Civic Si's hilariously marked up, it's a weird time to buy anything special. Although Subaru isn't budging much on their prices, at least they aren't price gouging.

As far that the wing being gone, not only do I think it makes the car look more mature, but I like it much better. I think it actually looks more aggressive in a certain sense, since it doesn't look like a car with more bark than bite. But yeah... I started to feel silly in it as well. I'd still feel a little silly in the Type-R, but I feel like it blends with the car better, and I wouldn't care because of what it is. A fast civic will never be cool to the general public, anyway. At least some people know what the STI is.
Wings exist on other cars...ZL1 1LE | 911 GT3 RS | 911 GT2 RS | AMG GT-R, etc. I do understand that the WRX STi is a bit more for the younger crowd but, it isn't the only wing on the street. I think the WRX is a solid value. It has a bit of punch. It handles well. It has 4 doors. It has a trunk. You can haul folks and stuff in it. I cannot speak to the ride quality of the new WRX. However, the last model (I had a 2015) rode OK. It was in the same category as our CLA 45 AMG. A bit choppy and could jar you from time to time. Not DSSV harsh (yikes that will adjust your spine and not in a good way - Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve -F1 stuff), but a bit more jouncy than an S Class.

BTW, with car interest rates climbing, a good case can be made for cash buying if possible. I can no longer make a valid case for investment earnings out-pacing interest rates. Just as an aside, the new C43 AMG has the same turbo 4 as the CLA (name plaque AMG). The CLA had a bit of turbo lag. On boost, it was a kick in the @$$. Ours is the twin turbo V6 (no name plaque).

Not particularly, but they are usually drowned out by the engine.
Really? Have you ever heard an LT4 in rock 'n roll mode? The Hellcats make a glorious noise, too. They are ferocious. I do agree that the exhaust note can be addicting. A supercharger doesn't mute the exhaust note like a turbo does. Even the AMGs are a bit muted. The lil' 4 pot had a bit of a bark but didn't roar or growl like the LT4. OK, the GT-R had a song to it.

Lol turbos don't mute anything, it's the mufflers. Have you heard an otherwise stock fa20 with muffler delete? Even with both cats and turbo it sounds like an angry chainsaw and is loud enough to annoy people in the next zipcode.
Seriously (again)? You think a turbo, spinning at 30,000RPMs or more, strictly off of exhaust gasses does not mute the exhaust note. Really?

Quiet Engines
As the air in a turbocharged engine is filtered through more pipes and components, the intake and exhaust noise is reduced and refined, making for a quieter and smoother engine noise – perhaps one of the most unexpected benefits of a turbocharged engine.
What is a Turbo Engine and How Does It Work? | Redex (holtsauto.com)

To compare a 4 pot to a god invented (and Smokey Yunick) V8 is well .... Yes, I've had a Fa20 engine in a WRX. We've had a CLA45, too. The AMG 4 pot had a barking note with the pops on upshifts from the DCT. The starting point is that many people running LT4s at NCM, Sears Point and most any track with decibel limits have to run turn-downs to pass the sound box under throttle.

I may be a bit snobbish, but a busted chainsaw doesn't seem to hold the same visceral impact as a Hellcat set to rock 'n roll

Lol, read the wording again, that link says reduced, not muted, big difference. The turbo might be theoretically quieter than the same engine straight piped but it's still loud enough to blow out your eardrums.

Turn downs are not unique to V8s or NA. Plenty of turbo engines with active exhausts have to switch to the quiet setting for some tracks.

More to the point, all engines FI or NA are way too loud for daily road use without a muffler. That's where you fine tune your exhaust note.

Not sure a cross-plane v8 is god designed :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:. Personal preference but the sound is annoying, I6 and V10 sound way better and are more balanced.

An I6 is a balanced engine. A V10 isn't. That is just math. There isn't a balance point in a V10. It is like saying an I5 is balanced (times 2). It isn't. 3 up and 2 down or 2 up and 3 down, times two. A V6 isn't a natively balanced engine either.

FWIW, I have never seen a stock exhaust 4 pot ring a decibel bell at any track. LT4s ring them all the time, with the stock exhaust. Yea, I've even owned a V4 that I had a modified exhaust on. It was loud enough. I didn't find it melodious. Yea, the AMG GT-R rang the bell at COTA. So did the higher horsepower AMG E63S. AMGs typically have their exhausts tuned to be a bit raucous.

Most also agree, however, that turbos have a knack for muffling engine noise, lowering the tone of the exhaust note, and layering on whooshing sounds. That’s no fun, particularly for brands that have built cult followings around the glorious exhaust notes of their naturally aspirated engines Ferrari Patents Novel Method for Making Turbocharged Engines Sound Better | News | Car and Driver

I'll stick to my guns about turbos muting (muffling) the exhaust note. I'll take C&D's word as authoritative.

Take your "balance" and stuff it.

Have you heard an I5? There isn't much better. The swan song for the petrol engine. Every ICE-powered car sold today should have an I5. Let's go out with a bang!
Zax, I've owned an Audi 5000 (1983). So, yea, I may have heard an I5. Frankly, the V4 in the Saab sounded far better. The '81 TR8 was better sounding than both of them. FWIW, I've been a car guy for a while. I've owned a fair amount of cars. The '96 LT1 was more raucous than the '98 LS1. The 2000 Firehawk had the dual / dual exhaust and was pretty sweet. The XJ was a very cool sounding car, too. I really like the sound of that V8 when you opened the taps. The older XK8 was just way cool to tool around in. The 335i was a great touring car with no storage (hard top convertible). The 530i was just a great driving 4 door. The 350Z ate tires like no tomorrow. The Europa was the coolest car I've ever owned. Both of the 6th Gens were fabulous. The ZL1 was simply, an everyday, garden-variety, world-class supercar. The Nomex fire suit still doesn't fit. However, I turned lap times 5 seconds quicker in my SS than my friend did in his GT3-RS at NOLA Motorsports Park (2:09 vs 2:04). I turned 1:58 in the ZL1.

Zax, have you owned an I5? Have you owned any car that could turn mid 7:20s at the Green Hell? Have you owned any car designed by Colin Chapman?

I hope you know that I was kidding...

No, I've never owned a Lotus. Almost did once, but that's a story for another time (and would have been a great mistake).
I took it wrong a bit. I should have known, you were kidding. My Bad! Owning a Lotus or an Alfa is a commitment or maybe you should be committed. The TR8 was of the same persuasion.

I feel like I got hosed on my price. I keep seeing posts about dealerships having a ton of them on their lots and struggling to get rid of the 22's. People are taking them home with thousands off of invoice, even the limited models.

Of course it's all because "pEoPle WoN't bUy tEh NeW wRx cUz iT sUx N tEh CoMpEtITiOn iS bEtTeR." Except the economy is taking a huge shit right now and buying a new "sports car" isn't top priority.
Zach, I have never seen the car market in such a state of flux. No cars. No financing. Financing at higher interest rates with some, lots, too much inventory. From the change cars like I change socks seats, I am on the sidelines for another year or two. I think that interest rates will settle but much higher than before COVID. I think supply chain issues will settle out to a new norm whatever that means. 18-24 months is my guess.

If I'm spending that much money I'm just going to go for nice used Corvette or Porsche some old man bought and parked in the garage. $50k for a Civic or Corolla...big nope. Don't care how fast it is.
Hey wait ... I resemble that remark (ZL1).

One of these days I will too. When I'm tool old and feeble to get in and out of it, so I just sit in the garage and stare at it.
Well, I found the ZL1 wouldn't work as my retirement car. In 2020 I did an iron butt from Knoxville to Acadiana. I was some stove up. MRC or not, Recaro seats - whatever. 1:58.9 at NOLA Motorsports Park - didn't matter. 11.88 at 128MPH at 103 degrees - who cares. 202 MPH top speed - Nope not enough.

$h!t happens and I changed cars.

To be fair, you are an old man. Is your ZL1 parked in a garage?
Zax, it was. It was replaced by a red car (C43). Actually, the ZL1 was replaced by a blue car (CLS450). The white CLA45 turned into a red car. The MKT has been there through all of these changes. 2 petrol heads under the same roof. My SO has great taste in all things (well, except me).

Everything is relative. Harsh is an understatement for the 305 X 30 X 20" Supercar3 (rear) and 285 X 30 X 20" (front) on that ZL1. MRC or not, there was little sidewall to help with absorbing any bumps. The WRX was a bit jiggly but rode with more compliance than that fire-breather. I'm ridin' on some all-season rubber on the TLX. The ride is, frankly, exemplary. Next to the general nature of the car, tires are likely the most influential part of the ride (A CLS450 rides better than a WRX - tires be d@mned).
