Hey. Just traded in my 04 WRX and picked up an 05 STI. It was manufactured January 05, and it has the steering wheel and pop-out cup holder of the 04 STI. Everything else interior is per the 05, as best I can tell.

What I'm curious about is what else changed from January 05 to later in 05. I know what was changed from 04 to 05 as a whole, but based on the interior, not everything had been fully changed over in January? Other than the cup-holder and steering wheel, what interior or, more importantly, mechanical changes hadn't been made in January of 05?

'5' is the tenth digit from the beginning of my VIN, coming after '3' and before 'L'.

Significance?

Also, this has to be stock interior. The whole center console is per '05 design, but with a pop-out cup holder. Who knows about the steering wheel. http://lxmotors.com/ go here and click on subaru, then check out the white one. The dealer I just bought this from didn't take it down yet so you can see all the pictures.

Mechanically, nothing changed.

Excellent. I could care less about a couple interior features, I was just worried a number of the 05 updates wouldn't be present.

The 5 means it's a MY05 car - just making sure (10th digit is model year - starting with later letters for the 90's, 2000=0, 2001=1, 2010=A, etc.)

Looks like someone just pulled that from an earlier car and put it in - I wouldn't worry about it. I would double check the overhead vent, though - AFAIK, that's not a stock option, so someone cut it in themselves. Make sure it's not leaking and such.

Good advice, thanks. I really hope that other than the vent and couple interior things, the car is as stock as advertised.

the engine shot definitely looks clean - the intake is still there, and I'm pretty sure the bpv is still there, so that's the main culprits down - nothing looks out of place.

Give it a test drive, and just look out for everything in the buying thread.

For better or worse, it is what it is, as I bought it from that dealer which is in IL and I'm in MA and its already on a truck. Also I think the interior discrepancies are stock. Look at pics of an 05 interior, and then an 04. Mine seems to be a weird hybrid between the two. Also why on earth would someone go to the trouble of replacing a better-looking 05 steering wheel with a stock 04 wheel?

just had a thought... you did check the history report, correct?

It could be that someone got into a minor accident, airbags deployed, and they replaced the steering wheel one with an 04 that they got for cheaper...

You just voiced my worst fear, which I've been avoiding even thinking about. It has a completely clean CarFax report and two prior owners.

That, however doesn't mean it's never been in an accident. I got in a $6000 crash in my 04 WRX and it was never reported. My hope is that if there was, by chance, a minor accident, that it was only cosmetic damage that was 100% repaired. So long as it looks right (which it does in the pictures) and its mechanically perfect, I don't care.

I'll be sure to update this thread when I get the car next week and report on what I find.

It'll probably be alright - I'd highly suggest getting it checked out by a mechanic (or even a subaru dealer). That way, regardless of whether or not it was in an accident, you'll be sure it's not going to give you strange issues.

Yeah, there's also the story of the red wrx (whose was that again?) - the guy bought it with a smashed in backend, carefully welded it together again using some other parts along the original factory seams - apparently it comes back with a 100% clean title and history report, and the professional body shops can't detect his work - moral of this story is, who cares as long as it works :)

Agreed. I just want this to be perfect.

Conveniently, I work at a Nissan dealer and can have any of the techs here throw it on a lift and look it over. May even go the Subie dealer route, though it would cost me.

The thing about this is, I'm 19, and this car is running awfully close to the edge of my financial means. If it starts crapping out on me due to past abuse (as was somewhat the case with my WRX) I will have problems.

Also notice the headlights have been cleared and the taillights are 06 swaps. Also, the WRX badge has been removed from the left side of the trunk.

Rotors are also aftermarket.

Take a look at the turbo heatshield. That will tell you a good story. Otherwise it does look like a good clean car. But definitely get it checked out by a mechanic/dealer/Suby specialist.

I noticed the rotors, but that didn't concern me. By 58k miles it may have just needed new ones.

The tail lights and WRX badge I should have seen. What am I looking for with the turbo heat shield?

This is killing me. The car is still like 5 days away and I'm getting more and more worried that I'm going to find issues.

What do you all think? It seems like if so many small cosmetic things have been altered, that it would be odd for nothing mechanical to have been messed with. I mean new tail lights and the roof vent alone would total between $500 and $800. I find it unlikely that someone would spend all that money on things like that if they weren't going to spend money upgrading things too.

I'm going to upload some undercarriage shots they emailed me to see if you guys spot anything else.

Looks stock...just dirty and rusty.

Check to the left of the intercooler and have them snap a pic there. Where the DP connects to the turbo is where you'd see the biggest discretion if that has been touched or not (in otherwords, had an aftermarket DP on it)

Unfortunately too late. It's already on a truck on the way. Either way I've already bought the car, so any problems it has are now mine. What I want to do is be prepared for any problems I can be when it gets here and I want to know what I need to be looking at.

So when it arrives, I will pop the hood and look down at the turbo and what should I see, roughly. If you could find a pic on google or something that shows what it should look like, stock, that would be much appreciated.

I will probably also be bringing it to a Subie dealer, however you know how dealer mechanics can be. They very often won't take the time to really consider what they're looking at, and will say everything looks fine when there might be something a bit off. Not all are that way, but I have a feeling it would be so at the Subie dealers around here.

I work at a Nissan dealer and even our senior mechanics (one of which used to work on STIs and EVOs) have done that to me.

Yes also noticed the cleared headlights, the rally vent hatch on the roof, the debadging, the changed headunit and steering wheel, and the different shift knob. There really is no telling whether this was just put back to stock really well, internally and exhaust wise. Hope you don't have any problems, from the looks of it it is hard to believe the owner would do so many cosmetic upgrades without doing any performance ones.
