how many times has your valentine 1 saved u?? is it really worth it??? 400 bucks for a radar detector... Couldnt you go just 5 above the speed limit and save money??? i know its good for racing and stuff... but cops here will just hide until they see some1 racing..... and their radar detector is off soo i would think the valentine 1 wouldntt be worth it..

I live and drive in two of the worst states for radar wielding state troopers: PA and NJ. For this reason, a Valentine1 or atleast a high end radar detector was an absolute necessity. In the short time (5 months) that I have owned my car, the V1 has alerted me to police radar presence while I was speeding no less than three times. Check out the following threads for testimonials:

Bel and Escort also make great radar detectors, but the V1 is the best for X-band and that's all that NJ Troopers use. In PA, I'm subject to much more advanced Ka band guns with instant on. One of my stories is how the V1's sensitivity saved my ass from a big ticket far from home.

No radar detector can save you from being paced, however, and cops love to pace people. I've been pulled over twice and ticketed once when an officer paced me.

It's your call, I like to dirve really fast 98% of the time, so I need a radar detector. If you're content doing five over in a car that can cruise at 89 comfortably, thne don't bother.

It should be noted that the $399 V1 included excellent documentation, a visor mount, a windshield mount with extra suction cups, two cords, a cigaretter lighter adapter, and a hardwire kit. With any other detector, you likely pay extra for these niceties. Plus the V1 is the only dectector with two antennas.

To be honest with you, the Valentine 2 with DSP will be out this year. If I were you, I'd wait.

I have a V-1 myself, and I've found it very reliable.

Nonetheless, I don't think any responsible driver with a good radar detector believes owning a V-1 is simply license to speed at will. It's simply an extra tool to use while speeding SAFELY.

For example, those damn fools cutting in and out of the left lane, trying to pass a slow group of cars one at a time, with or without a radar detector will cause undue risk.

Moreover, the bses radar detector is not more valuable than common sense and experience. Don't be the only guy in the left lane going 20 over the limit. If you know troopers in that area use spot on radar or lasers, wait till you have a "patsy" about 200 yard in front of you. Repeatedly check your rear-view mirror for pacing police cars or tailgaters -- because if you do detect radar and want to slow down quickly, the last thing you need is a 5500 lb SUV shearing the top of your car off.

I don't speed that much myself, and definitely not in the city because there are too many things - dogs, kids, clowns on stilts, etc. - that could come jumping out into the street. I try be aware of how much braking distance I need. But I like having a radar detector because I don't like the idea of that cop having it entirely within his or her discretion to give you a ticket or not for even going 3 mph over the limit.

Dan,

I don't remember where I read that. I think it was on www.radartest.com, but I'm not positive. Knowing Valentine, it may take forever for them to release it. The V1 is one of the best selling radar detectors on the market inspite of its high price tag. The thing is absolutely amazing!

BambooI, that's right. the cop rides behind you for a certain distance and as long as he doesn't gain on you, he knows you are going faster than him. Then he writes you a ticket. I plan to go to court for my ticket and request the patrol car assignment and speedometer calibration certificate for his car. If you doesn't have both of these documents, I'm off. Then I'll have to be REALLY CAREFUL when I drive in Burlington.

Don't know about a 'new' design, but whichever you decide, buy the V1. I've had one for years and we have 1 in each car right now. Totally worth the relatively high entry fee. I haven't gotten a ticket since I bought the thing. Money well spent. I always buy directly from Valentine. Small company with great customer service. No connections...

radar test

I absolutely need a radar detector. So I checked out the radar test site that plat listed and they tested four high-end radars. For those considering the V1 I would suggest reading it.

Let me know what you all think....

Hmm..I too was thinking about the V1 radar detectpr, but then the problem was its price. I eventually got the Passport 8500 radar detector, and the range on the thing is simply amazing. I know that I have not been driving for as long as many of you guys here.... I got my license when I was 16. i am 20 now, but I will be the first to tell you that I am one of those guys who could fall asleep behind the wheel if I had to travel at the speed limit for too long. I have to be going faster than most people for some kind of entertainment.... That is not to say that I speed excessively.. (I have never been above 100mph ever.. that is my personal speed limit :p ) . In my 4 years of driving faster than the posted speed limit, I have been pulled over a grand number of ZERO times for speeding. If not for my radar detector, I know that things would be different. When I first wanted a radar detector, my parents were very much against it, but when it actually saved them a few times while driving, they insist that I do not leave home without my radar detector :)

The only thing that I don't like (although it isn't bad) is that the range of the 8500 is so far that on a good day, it can take a period of 15-20 secs can pass between the time that you get the first beep and the time that you actually see the cop. I am sure that you V1 owners can identify with this as well..

Do you want less warning? ..where you have only 5 seconds or less so the cop can see you slamming your brakes LOL :).

No, don't get me wrong, I love getting the warning and all, but when your radar detector starts squeeling for 20 secs and you find that it was just a building off to the side if the highway, it does get to the point where you pay less attention when it does go off....

I should mention that I have been hit with laser a few days ago for the first time.... Thank God the Passport saved my booty! I was doing about 90 in an 80 zone and all of a sudden.... beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppppp!!!!!!!

I slammed on the brakes without making it too obvious that I knew what just happened... Radar Detectors aren't exactly legal in most places in Canada ;)

How about that V1? You guys think these are worth it? Only Go 5mph over and save money for mods/gas? Or get a detector and feel somewhat safe other than the "instant on" radar detector? Guess it isn't worth it?

V2 is coming out??? What would happen to all the V1s, no more updates? Sounds like a redesign in hardware to me for a new version to come out. I doubt they would just send you a new one. From what I heard when there was a hardware update, it cost $150. Imagine how much it would cost for a total replacement.
