USB cable to center console: path of least resistance

1263 Views 14 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  MainFrame
Want to run a USB to Thunderbolt cable from the USB port through the gap in the arm rest (seems like there's enough clearance without disrupting the latch) and along the trim up to the center console and likely mount it in the little shelf or up on the dash/vent area (think there's an MPow unit that was recommended on here).

I know I could leave it Bluetooth, but the audio quality difference is really noticeable to me.

Anyone attempted this before? Any gotchas? Why they don't put a USB port where the cig lighter is...

Because it's a terrible idea to have items easy to steal right out in the open when you can put it in the glove box or arm rest.

Under the center console.. pull it off, run the wire, put it back on, done. That's where I run the RCAs from my stereo to the amp under my seat.

I never leave my phone in my car, not worried about it.

Ah, ok, wasn't sure if that would be a nightmare or not.

Why would you play music through your phone when you can get a thumb drive to hold several times that much music for less that 1/10th the price.

IIRC, in my WRX it was just four screws (and the shift knob) that had to be unscrewed.. then the whole thing lifts off in two pieces.

You're that guy on the forums, aren't you?
Cellphones should be required to be locked in the trunk of your car before the car can even be started. Use a thumb drive. It's a better option.

I do it because my phone has audio playing apps (that work with all formats, ie FLAC), voice guided navigation with alerts (Waze), 160gb of storage space, and I always have it with me.. I've never had a thumb drive that plays music. :wiggles:

Oh, ya.. streaming too. Can't forget that.
I've not come across any typical music format my stock hu doesn't play from a thumb drive. There are also several mp3 players that look just like a thumb drive and plug in the same way and still cost notably less than a cell phone. Streaming music is great if you have infinite data, but you can burn up several gb a week playing music at a reasonable quality. I'm not paying 15bucks a gb to stream music in my car when I go over.

You really can't let this go, can you?
Nope, I stand by everything I said and there is no argument for having a cell phone anywhere near driver access. There are better options available especially for music.

I live in a province where there's a $240 fine for distracted driving, I get it. But there are useful apps on the phone (Google Maps) as well as the convenience of streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify, etc. (and their "offline" feature so you don't use data) that makes the phone much much more useful than a thumb drive.

I was unaware that the OEM head unit can play FLAC, that's pretty cool. It's a moot point though, since the music bypasses my headunit entirely how I have it set up. Lets be honest, the stock head unit has terrible sound quality any way you look at it. When my EQ sees signal on the AUX input it automatically switches from the head unit to AUX.. that way it actually gets a clean signal to the amp.

As far as needing infinite data to stream music, that seems like quite a stretch. I have 3gb/month on my data plan, and I have streamed music for several hours a day while simultaneously using Waze (which uses more data than streaming music) virtually every day for three months while road tripping, and I never went over my data allotment. I would usually come in around 2.5gb per month, and that was with using the phone as my only internet connection.

If you can't listen to Pandora on your phone without getting data overages, I suggest finding a new cell provider.
