Why wrap the turbo and uppipe? Why does it make the turbo more effecient?

Higher EGTs are faster. Keeping heat in the exhaust/turbo keeps it away from the I/C.

The higher EGTs is the primary reason for the wrap, or for a heatshield. Preventing "heat soak" i.e. keeping the heat out of things like the IC that you don't want to get hot is a side benefit.

+ 1 to the above.

Keep in mind, the turbo is primarily spooled by heat waves through the turbine. The more the gas cools, the more the heat pulses disperse... the less reactive your turbine will act.

It's hard to think of, but don't think of the turbo turbine like a water wheel or something that is pushed by a flow of total volume. The turbine needs heat to do its thing.. And sharp pulses of it. Not just a flow of air.
