Hey

I got a wrx 02 with 102,450 miles. I changed the timing belt + water pump.
About turbo, When i m acceraleting , the car is going fast pretty good until the RPM hit 5000 tr/min , i can felt the power is down but little bit ( like i'm on the cruise) but after around 5900 tr/min RPM , the power comes back.
In result , i lost power between 5000 rpm and 5900 rpm.

What problem could be?

no engine light ON.

Except i got a engine light ON, when i stay around 70 and i want to go fast , the engine light appear and it looks like the engine cut the power for 1 sec . the engine light disappears couple days later.

But before that, i didnt notice the lost power between 5000 and 5900 rpm.

do you have the code for the check engine light?

Turbo boost gauge readings would also be helpful - do you have one?

P0244 - Turbo Wastegate Solenoid “A” Range/Performance

I'd check wiring and / or vacuum lines.

Off topic: Bill... I'm embarassed that you have twice as many posts as I, but have been on here only 2 years longer. I need to start the "sup" thread back up.

I dont know much about wrx , it is my first wrx, it is stock
This started immediately after the timing belt water pump job? I'd guess the solenoid wiring was never reconnected or the vacuum line was incorrectly hooked up.

I'll see if I can dig up some more definitive info ...

Just to elaborate... p0244 is the "Overboosting" code. What this means? It means that the wastegate isn't allowing exhausting of the gas around the turbine wheel before the computer detects an excessive amount of boost. IE "Overboosting". It can also mean that your wastegate isn't able to vent off enough exhaust gas, and the turbine is still able to produce additional boost above the computer's requested amount (called boost creep)

This can be a few different problems.
One... your wastegate is stuck closed.
Two... Your boost control solenoid is stuck closed.
Three... There's a problem with your tune, and the wastegate isn't opening soon enough.
Four... Your car is experiencing boost creep beyond what the wastegate can bleed off.
Five... there is a manual boost controller installed between the turbo compressor housing and the wastegate, and it's not performing correctly.. or has been adjusted incorrectly.
Six... The restrictor pill is in the solenoid's hose instead of in the compressor hose.

What're your mods?


(bill... with no electricity keeping the solenoid closed, our subaru EBCS's stay open. This is why a broken, or unplugged solenoid creates only 7psi - wastegate pressure)

the engine light code p 0244 was here before changing timing belt.
where is the vacuum line?

I had a fudge in my post that I corrected before you quoted it... can you fix it for me? switch open and closed in your quote.

And I'm good at explaining this because I've had the problem myself and did a lot of research. For me... it was an aggressive tune in the summer causing overboosting in the winter.

the engine light came before timing belt changed.
When i bought the car 2 months ago. i tested on hwy and it was the first time the engine light came up.

after that , i put a filter k&n

after the timing belt changed , i added the grimmspeed pulley + mishomashi hoses for radiator

And now , i have a lost power between 5000 to 5900 rpm for all gears.

That's neither here nor there. Can you take a large picture of the passenger side of the engine bay for me? Especially of the turbo if you can.

It sounds to me like the person who previously had the car may have removed a manual boost controller that was in it, and just put a plastic connector where the boost controller was. Wouldn't be the first time.
