I'm shopping for new tires for my 2012 WRX and one thing I've never understood is sometimes I can find a tire that has a treadwear rating of 500 and a traction rating AA (I'm not mistaking the traction and temperature rating, I really mean only the traction rating of AA), but then I can find a tire that is a 280 A. The lower the treadwear rating, the softer the tire should be, right? So you'd think that below a certain treadwear rating you'd see almost all AA and above that, mostly A.

Also, when comparing Ultra High Performance Summer and All-Season tires, I can sometimes find a AA All-Season and an A Summer. Confusing as I would think practically any Summer tire would have better traction than any All-Season. Of course, there is more to traction than the hardness/softness of the rubber, so I guess differences in tread patter and stiffness have a big effect.
