So it was snowing in the south today and I needed to change my oil. I had a coupon sitting around for a $25 oil-change at my local Subaru dealer. What the hell, why not... it was miserably cold. They changed my oil and did a '25-point' inspection.

Less than 10 miles from leaving the dealership my check engine light comes on... (i drive an 04 wrx)

This happened Sat afternoon and they'll be closed tomorrow. Which means I have to wait till Monday to have them pull the code.

The car seems to drive fine, but I'm having a hard time believing it was just a coincidence.
Also, no I didn't fill up on gas.

Did they forget to put something back onto my car? :(

Go to a local auto parts store and have them pull the code for you so you dont have to wait until monday

MOST LIKELY cause, disconnected vaccum line...... set something along the lines of an EVAP leak etc, however it may not even be related to what they did, best bet is to go to an Auto Zone etc, they'll have scanners there that they'll allow you to scan your car fo' free! Best of luck

Your WRX should have 3 cats... One in the up-pipe, one in the down-pipe, and one just before the muffler. From your picture, I agree, you have a catless downpipe.

There are threads on this how to get rid of the CEL for this reason.

If I were in your shoes, I would be in the dealer's office Monday very upset (assuming you didn't know you were buying a mod'ed car). This would have been very evident to anyone who was looking. Intake and BOV are no big deal - but the DP adds a lot of power with proper EM.

All 4 rims bent? That just doesn't sound like potholes - sounds like rallying.

Good luck man - you are in the right place for help.

Are you aware if you are running any engine mgt.? You do not have a stock downpipe.

i don't think so, but where would an EMS be located?
The dealer would have to scan the ECU and tell you if it's stock or not.

+1 My guess is that you are not running EM, since you are throwing that code. It is pretty easily tuned out, from my understanding. (my Cobb AP does it with an ots map)

I am misssing a cat, I only have the one back by the rear axle.
The dealer told me that there is a bypass plug for the cat to have the CEL not trigger and that may have gone bad.

If I get an EM system to fix this, I won't pass emissions right? I think I'm moving to cali in about a month... I hear they are really strict.

You wouldn't pass a visual the way it is right now anyway

What are the emission laws in Georgia? Your setup would not pass inspection testing in Vermont - and a dealer who would sell that car would be fined.

I just checked into emissions laws. There is something called the Georgia Clean air act. If you live in 1 of 13 counties (of which I do) the dealer is required by law to sell you a car that passes emissions.

I talked to the dealer and he is aware of the law. He says he didn't know there wasn't a cat. He wants me to bring the car back to him and he'll have a shop out there put a cat and new downpipe back on it. I'm hoping I'll get to keep whats on there now... pass emissions and then slap it back on.

As far as the other replais...
I found some stock rims for $100. I think I'm just going to have my current tires (almost-new) mounted and rebalanced on those.

I need to get a heat-shield for the downpipe. I was told that's why I'm having problems w/ the power-steering hose and right CV boot. Too much heat is coming off and wearing out the rubber.

All and all I think it's starting to get better, assuming my car doesn't blow-up in 2 years.

Or... do I tell the dealer I want my money back?
04 WRX for 11,500 w/ 67k - I think it's an okay deal.

I don't know what advice to give you... your dealer broke the law - and there just is NO way he didn't know he did it. What is the date of the inspection sticker on the car? If your dealer is the originator of that sticker - watch out!

The price you paid seems like a good price for a non-mod'd car, or one that was mod'd and taken care of. Again - I am very concerned about these poor mods and bent rims. Are you finding heavy mud and/or water damage on the underside of the car?

If you love it - keep it. If not, there are plenty of other subie's out there. It is unlikely they will let you keep the parts (I wouldn't if I were them) - but you are in a very strong negotiating position.
