Sunroof exploded on me 2015 wrx

I was driving down the highway today and next thing i hear is BOOOM! I thought I blew out a tire, my ears were ringing from the noise and I was disoriented trying to slow down and figure out what happened. Long story short, my sunroof exploded into pieces on the highway. I was not around any trucks nor construction. I took the car to the dealership right after it happened and the manager was trying to tell me that either it happened because my sunroof was tinted or it was hit by a rock (he would point to an impact area on the glass). Has this happened to anyone else's wrx?
SO they are quoting me $720 to fix it, and I called SOA to see if they could help with covering the cost under warranty, they said they might cover a portion of it but they will let me know in 2 days.

I cannot say that I've ever seen a moon/sun roof just randomly shatter. I would presume that something hit it, but I'm not sure what. I don't really see how tint would cause this, and if it did then SOA would be responsible as it comes standard tinted. Good luck OP, let us know what happens.

Edit: Is that a crater I see in the moon roof hood?
It might be a case of deja vu but I do recall someone on this forum posting about how their sunroof exploded. Keep pestering them and assure them that it exploded on its own and you might just get it covered.
I remember hearing about Veloster sunroofs exploding. I wonder if the tempering process was not performed correctly. Idk. https://www.consumeraffairs.com/new...-sunroof-explodes-without-warning-011713.html
yea it's def an experience that I do not wish on anyone else. Is it possible that something hit the sunroof? it is a possible but i think unlikely. You also have to consider i was driving 70 mph and the trajectory for anything to land on my roof would have to come most likely from a higher level, and i was not going under a ramp or bridge and there were no trucks around for anything to fall from them...Oh well at least you guys know this is possible to happen and if it does don't panic like me! It sounded like a gun shot, I almost got into an accident because of this. Hopefully SOA will help me out on this (fingers crossed).

I think it's a safety issue, I was lucky my sunroof was closed and the cover wasn't open or i could have had pieces of glass all over my face.
I thought window tint films usually help improve the structural integrity of a window by holding it together in the event of a break.
I recal seeing this happen to someone elses car on the forum a while back. Theres was right after they got the car. Hopefully they see this and let you know what their outcome was.
Buffeting can cause this.

I recalling seeing a new report or two about this happening. I Google search will bring up some reports.
if SOA doesnt help, wouldnt this be covered as a glass incident for insurance?
Doesn't the sunroof already come tinted???
yeah lol there's that too.

lol, I'm surprised the "manager" even said that.

He was trying to think of things to void the warranty on the spot. I bought the car with the windows tinted, I did not know that the sunroof comes from factory tinted, that's good to know!

Yea I thought about that, then I remembered I got the el cheapo insurance with high deductible :nono:

I think every sunroof on all cars come factory tinted, I don't think I've ever seen a non tinted sunroof from a dealership. Not sure where you're located but I bought my rex from Subaru Stamford and they're all really cool. They probably wouldn't even try to come up with something like that. Good Luck with that man.
