Interesting story today about the marketing of high powered cars. Focuses on the volvo ad with the animated s40.

Anyway, it mentions that average car HP has increased from 107 in 1984 to 227 in 2004.

Basically, unless you've modded to add HP, we're all average. Must be the SUVs driving it up.

Agreed. But intersting that we are exactly average in HP and they use the HP rating in TV and print ads as if it's impressive/overwhelming.

I'd like to see wheel horsepower, and torque, per pound in all advertising. ;)

There is no way that 227 is average. Granted, alot of cars these days are breaking the 200hp barrier, but look at all of the other 4 bangers, and even alot of 6's, running well under 200hp. I think it's just a marketing tactic.

I think the e46 M3 was the first street car to break the 100hp/liter barrier.
Talking n/a mass production street cars...

I'm pretty sure it was actually the S2000. There was all kinds of press about Honda pulling 100hp per liter. Then, of course, a few other cars did it (i.e. M3, Celica GT-s, RSX-S, etc.).

Of course, if you mean OVER 100hp per liter then the M3 is probably correct.

S2000 came out year 2000 and it was the first NA car to break 100HP/liter. 2000-2003 models got 240HP on 2 liters and 2004 model got 240HP on 2.2 liters.

OK so it was the S2K. For some reason I feel like the M3 had some distinction for it, 101hp/liter... don't know why. Maybe because it wasn't VTEC?

M3 has variable valve timing too. And S2k = 120hp/L M3=101 btw S2k did it first

Don't forget the rotary engines! 1.2L and 1.3L non-forced induction can pump out tons of HP. (and only 3 moving parts! I still love my RX-7)
