Hey gang,
Has anyone upgraded their audio system to add Sirius XM? Specifically, the genuine Subaru system? The dealer quoted me over $500, so I was wondering if that price is pretty typical. Thanks.

I have satellite radio in my truck. I love it, and it's relatively cheap. But if you don't have a broad taste in music, I would say that it isn't for you. I wouldn't be able to justify the $15/mo I pay for just 1 channel. I do love 90's on 9 and 80's on 8 though. 95% of that music never gets old!

Im a fan of the external XM unit. I have had an external XM radio since 04. I am able to bring it to different cars/bikes, play it in the garage while working on other projects and I have even set mine up to be my wake on my alarm clock. Ill post pics with my set up. Also since I have XM I also run the app on my iphone and scan stream on my 2012 oem stereo though the Bluetooth A2DP

I don't have the external unit for 3 reasons.

1. Auxilary ports diminish the sound quality, so unless you're ready to shell out a ton of money for higher end HUs on all your vehicles it's not really worth it. OTOH, you don't have have multipe subscriptions for each additional unit.
2. Mine is built into my truck so I can't exactly pull it out, but the superior sound quality is worth it IMO.
3. I would NEVER use it at home. I have a Bose portable sound dock that I use all the time so I'll just turn on pandora with my iPhone.

These are all interesting points. Thanks for your responses. My biggest concern with an aftermarket system is that the installer could mess-up something. I know there are a lot of good installers out there, but mistakes can happen.

@Mikie13, if you ever get satellite radio, you'll never look back!

My buddy had it in his truck back in college...and he had the portable unit. Plug it into his truck and rock...then he'd bring it into our apartment on campus and we'd rock out there. Really was cool and the sound quality for the portable unit was actually pretty good. Unless you're an audiophile, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference from much anything else. The SQ of regular radio is piss poor anyway...

If you have unlimited data plan on your phone just use slacker radio. That's all I listen to in my car and its free and I love it.
Droid. Doesn't connect.

I have an Aux jack, but the sound quality that comes out of it is absolutely horrible. Think unamplified sound.

Just get a head unit that works with it...makes life easier. I can get you a decent price on everything youll need. I have it for my personal setup. Its def better than fm or am stations. The aux port hook up works but to do that everytime you get in your car on your phone or even having another unit hanging there can be an eyesore when you can have everything integrated. Pm me if you want a pricing.

I have been happy with the AUX input for XM. I have had either loud exhausts, the top down or wind noise so as long as It was decent sound im more then happy. Though I do agree that it can always be better hardwired. Im mostly listeing to O&A in the morning so it makes for a good wake noise.

I had a portable unit in my old tC which was used via FM broadcast, and my rex came with the subie unit (navi H/U includes sirius module).... I am not currently paying for a subscription, but the integrated unit was by far better for both ease of use and clean look....though the after market portable did have some additional features that I miss...like being able to pause.
