Rev Matching on 2017 WRX?

I am shopping for a new WRX and test drove a base, 6-speed manual the other day. I noticed some curious behavior while doing so and wanted to check with the collective brain trust to see what you all think might have been going on here.

My experience felt as if the car had rev matching, a "feature" which would likely prevent me from purchasing it.

When shifting under heavy load, after depressing the clutch and letting off the gas, the car would seem to rev itself. Even weirder, it would do this as a slow rolling on of the throddle, not a quick blip. It did this several times all on its own while accelerating up hill. It didn't seem to do this going down hill or under moderate acceleration, only when I really got on it.

So here's my question, has Subaru incorporated this silly technology into this car or might something else have been going on? I appreciate your insights.

Thanks,

Ben

Doesn't have any rev matching I know of. The throttle curve isn't linear so if you were on the throttle a little bit it will do that.

It's called rev hang. If you do some searching on the forums, you'll see it's an annoying problem. However, peeps say it's fixable with a tune.

Once you get used to it, you can use it to your advantage. Took me 5,000 miles to adjust, though.

^ This with a slight edit.

Interesting. I drive a '91 Miata - not a car that's particularly sensitive to my right foot kind of sitting there in wait. May just need to adjust my driving style. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I will check the rev hang issue out. Is there any chance Subaru will fix this with some kind of ECU update? Was it a problem on the 2015 and 2016 models?

Yes it's a problem on the 15 & 16 models. There was an ECU flash for the 15 that purportedly *improved* it. I have a 16 and it's still there, though.
