Hey Guys,

I recently purchased a 2018 WRX with a push start and have unfortunately damaged both fobs. Does anyone have a good solution for getting new keys? I was told that I may have to get a whole new tech system to program new keys, 2k project....Can anyone validate this or offer up an alternative solution?

Thanks!

That's on par with what I was told when my wife lost the FOB to our 2017 Outback. They said since we still have one of them they can use that one to program a new one for only $190, but if we lose both they will need to keep the car for two weeks minimum to replace the electronics, and it will end up being around $1900 to get it all done.

Wow! Really? I would have never guessed losing (or damaging) two keys could cost 2 grand to fix. Such things in the electronic age make me fearful of where we are headed...............

That is not entirely true. It is insanely more of a pain if you lose both, but I don't believe it cost that much. You would have to tow the car in, and it would sit for a few days. They take the keyless transmitter and column lock/ immobilizer out, send it to Subaru, they reprogram them for the new fob, and send it back. The whole process takes about 3 days.

That said, the keys are the only "purchase" that you have to make, the rest is labor. They don't "replace your tech system".

Actually you need a new BIU if you lose both smart keys, and I think it is upwards of 1500 even at dealer cost. Ask me how I know :unhappy:

How did both your fobs get wasted anyway?

Can my 2018 WRX "Limited" use a "cut" non-"smart" brass key to open the door to, say, for example, grab a stashed REAL key inside and then ... drive, lock, proceed as normal with "smaht" key?
