First of all, hello to all from a new guy.

Second.. I have an '06 WRX that I recently bought. I noticed a whining noise coming from the rear of the car. It's very high pitched and fairly faint. I can only hear it when coming to a stop. Sounds to me like it's coming from the rear diff. Is this normal? If not, WTF?! I changed the rear diff fluid, and haven't noticed an improvement.

does it change pitch as you slow to a stop?

Possibly brake pads? E-brake shoes (inside of rear rotor) ?

Good suggestion. I tested your brake theory and it seems that is the case. There's no noise when I roll to a stop. I did just have my pads changed so I guess I have a place to start.

It's not like any noise I've ever heard brakes make before, it's not a grind, or a squeak, it's a whine, almost like the 'reverse' whine only a much higher pitch. Hence my initial suspicion. Oh well. Brakes is a much simpler issue than drivetrain so I'll get it sorted out.
