Bought a passport 7500s today for 50$. Anyone got the same model or a similar one. I'm kinda currious as to how well they work, this is my first time with a radar detector.

Well I can't comment on the Passport. I have the Valentine 1. It has been rated the best detector by Car & Driver in every test they've even run. Passport always comes in second but for $50 I'd have bought it instead of my V1. The guy who made my detector co-founded/developed Passport then split off on his own.

What I can tell you is to make sure you mount it high on the windshield but not in the tinted band. The higher the better. When you go over a hill it gives you better range the higher it is mounted.

I just got my Passport 8500 X50 at Best Buy last week. Same price as on Escort's website and I got immediate gratification. I know it has already saved me once. Good stuff Maynard!

Which is better between the V1 and the Passport 8500 X50 seems to vary based on opinion.

I liked the looks of the Passport better and didn't feel the silly arrows justified the extra expense for the V1.

My .02 is that when the thing signals an alert, unless it is an area I know is a false (Alarm, Automatic doors), I'm going to slow down. It really doesn't matter to me which direction it is coming from.

In the end they are both great products. You really couldn't go wrong with either one.

I agree with your first statement, it's all a matter of opinion.

however, I disagree with how you are looking at the arrow's on the v1 for a price different. either $300 or $400 are both a lot of money, and really makes no different which someone buy's, to me. $100 difference is very little in this comparison because if you are going to spend $300, then some can justify $400.

the arrows are also useful. I am not saying the x50 or the v1 is better then the other for detection, but the arrows are a nice feature.

just another opinion for the bunch.

Okay, I'll bite....

Why are they a nice feature? What do you see them doing for you?

Just a short disclaimer....I like argueing for the sake of argueing....I don't give two $hits what I think much less what you think. :D

If the arrow is pointing behind u that means u can outrun the cop

they show you where the radar is coming from obviously. the arguement that as long as radar is picking up a signal, i'll slow down is completely false with the v1. with other radar detectors, there is no other option.

Here is a scenario....

You're driving along a highway at 60 mph in a 45 mph zone.

You're changing a cd while talking on the cell phone while attempting to shift from 4th to 5th.

All of the sudden your V1 goes ape $hit.

You're telling me you

a) casually check the old V1 to see where the signal is coming from....

or

6) SLOW THE F0CK DOWN!!!!!!!

Well, in that scenerio, of couse you'd slow down, regardless of the radar detector used.

I think the Valentine shows direction as well as the number of radar sources. IMHO, more info is better.

Possible scenerio (from what I've read):

You're speeding along and the V1 shows bogey up ahead. You slow down and see someone pulled over. Arrow changes from front to side, finally to rear. Seconds later it shows another bogey in front - in addition to the one you're leaving behind.

With just audible tones, you only know bogeys are present, not where they are. Hearing just tones could lead one to believe he was in the clear without knowing more are around the corner.

I think the topic of which is better has been beaten to death. Different reviews will yeild different results. But they always finish close to one another (Val., Passport, BEL).

Here's one that didn't really favor the V1.

thats very interesting... I like the idea of that. there have been many times when I am passing a jewel and my detector goes off so i ignore it because the security system always sets it off.. sure enough...... every now and again I will end up going past a cop about an 1/8th mile down... atleast with the arrows, its pointing to the radars source.

I don't change cd's while I drive as I have the stock 6-disc in dash, so there is never a need. I also don't talk on my cell phone very much while i'm driving because I frankly don't trust other drivers. if my v1 goes apesht, I look at the v1... just as I had been glancing at it most of the time i'm driving, when i'm speeding.

your scenario is one that the driver is relying on the v1 to speed, and I am using it in conjunction with my eyes to look for 5-0's.

The advantage to the arrows bogey counter and strenght meter are huge!

V1 can detect Ka band like 1.5 miles away! If it is just picking up a faint signal to the front of me then I know I need to slow down in the next mile. I don't ever have to SLAM on my brakes which looks suspicious to the pigs anyway. I also then have the opportunity to locate the cop. Sometimes they can be on the other side of the freeway. V1 is the only detector with a rear facing antenna too!

I have never seen a PP 8500 win in a comparo unless they included the optional Laser Jammer in the test. It is expensive to add on too. Last test I saw in Motor Trend gave the nod to Passport but said V1 actually was superior if not for the laser jammer on the PP.

It's all choice. Either one will keep you pretty safe.

One cool thing to note with V1. When they release the next version I can upgrade it by sending in my old one and I get a reduced price!

My scenario is a made up one. It definately does NOT describe MY driving. I was going for the extreme scenario. Actually it pretty much describes a lot of what I see on the highway during my commute.

I think I definately rely more on my scouting the road ahead and watching for the po po than I do the radar detector.

My big point is that the radar detector is like Pavlov's dog. The bell goes off and the dog starts drooling. My Passport goes off and I let off the gas.

understandable.

I still look at my v1 before I slow down, with previous radar detectors, i've had to just slow down as soon as I hear the beep, which is why I like the v1.
