Looking for suggestions as to which radar detector to get. I have heard hood things about both the Val 1 and Passport 8500, and the 8500 is much cheaper. What about Jammers? Wouldn’t a jammer be the best defense??? Rocky Mtn. Viper is both a jammer and a detector, wouldn’t this be the best product then since it has both technologies? Also, what about the K-40?

Commercially available radar jammers don't work. In order to get a radar jammer that works, you would have to build one, and it would be quite illegal, since it would violate about every FCC rule. Not to mention that fact that you car would show up on low flying military aricraft radar and they might shoot at you. Don't laugh, it almost happened to some cops in England!

The V1 and Escort 8500 are the best radar detectors. The rest are a waist of money. There have been A LOT of thread about radar detectors, BTW.

You would essentially want to emit signals on all radar frequencies. You would want them to be strong enough that when a cop pulls the trigger on his radar gun, it will immediately read out a speed, which will be wrong in all cases. No matter how many times he clocks you, the speed will be the same.

Again, this is illegal on many levels.

The Jammers they sell here are "Passive" and I don't believe it works. The only one that supposedly works are the "active" jammers which actuallly sends out false signals. That's why it is illegal because it transmits unauthorized frequencies.

In which case, you would also be setting off everybody's radar detecetor including your own. You'll be the only one speeding since everybody with a detector would be slowing down :).

sweeeeeeeet!!

except i don't think that'd work w/ the LIDAR or the camera picture crap new funky technology the popos have

so how do the "passive" jammers work? what's so shady about them?
I believe that the passive jammers only emit when a signal is detected (i.e. you just got clocked), whereas the active variety are broadcasting all the time (hence Jim assertion that you'd be breaking all sorts of FCC laws and getting shot at by military folks).

what would be the point of a jammer that turned on after you got clocked? wouldnt that defeat the purpose b/c then the cop would already have your speed tracked?

The Bel 950 and derivatives are actually pretty good too. About a year ago they were the best you could buy, but detector technology moves fast. Mine has saved my butt on several occasions, but the best detector is your eyes coupled with an alert attitude when you are speeding. I constantly scan both sides of the road and median as far ahead as I can see. It's surprising how many people speed yet singlemindedly focus on the 20 ft space in front of their vehicle.

Basically, I think the trick is not to rely on your detector, rather just use it as an extra line of defense.

No, it sends out a bunch frequencies designed to confuse the radar gun. The gun knows how fast your going based on how quickly the radar comes back to it. If it suddenly get a bunch of different signals, it won't know what to do with them and therefore won't read anything meaningful.

Sonar works on how long it takes for the signal to return. It can only tell you how far away something is, not how fast it is moving.

Radar determines speed by measuring the doppler shift of the reflected signal.

ok, then 2 questions:

1. why do you think passive jammers are a crock?

2. how fast reacting are passive jammers? effective? legal?

1) They can't react fast enough.

2) They aren't effective, they can't react fast enough. Several states have made them illegal, which pissed off the editors of Car and Driver because it leads people into believing that they work!

A Stalker K-band radar gun takes <1 second to read your vehicle's speed once the cop has acquired you. A passive jammer could work on a non-instant on gun. But since most cops use instant on, they CAN'T REACT FAST ENOUGH! :D

I own a Phantom II radar jammer and it does work, but only from like a 1/8 mi away or farther. The signal is strong enough to clock you speed when you are closer. I know b/c I have tested it with a friend who is a cop with a radar detector. Its ok but if I had to do it over again I would have got a V1. The Phantom II has a radar detector also but it is no where as good as the V1.

so how much does one of those jammers cost?

btw, how exactly does instant on work?
I got mine for $269. Instant radar is when the cop just aims the radar gun and zaps you once to get a reading. This is how I tested my jammer since most cops use instant radar.
