I want a radar detector, but my problem is not which one at the moment. I want to know if I can put it in my glove box, and not have to worry about interference. I mean would i get the same performance from it if it was directly on the dash as if it was in the box

No, it will not work that way. the way a radar detector works, (360 degree one for instance) is that it puts out a wave around it.... kinda like a force field. the cops radar also puts out a wave. so the cops wave is going to hit YOUR radar detectors wave BEFORE it hits your car giving you a ample time to slow down before the cops wave actually hits your car and gets a speed reading. the detectors wave kinda meets the cops half way.

for this reason, you will not get good performance from it from your glove box... infact you wont really get any. if your in a state where its illegal, i wouldnt get one.... cops can be real a$$holes about it then... not only will it get confiscated but they can give you upto 3 tickets just for that one violation. but you could always try to hid it around a cop. but they can often see it while driving by.

if you are in a state that allows them, i stronly suggest that you get an escort cordless for easy hiding if its illegal in your state. or a valantine 1. both top of the line but costly....
personally i use a wistler from circuit city that cost me about $60 and it does well for front and behind, but its 360 range sucks... i will probably upgrade to an escort cordless in a month or so. but if your not an "idiot" about driving a cheap whistler or cobra should do you just fine.

but remember, no radar detector will save you from a lasar.

EDIT** i just saw that you are from chicago land area like me... they are perfectly legal... but if you are still fishy about having a cop see it (they can still confiscate it in IL if they want) then get a cordless so you can hide it easily if you get pulled over.

ya i would also advise against putting it in the glove box. I read that cops will aim the radar at your lic - plate, so that gives you a 3 foot radius from there, so putt it lower on your windsheild and you should be fine.

I also would go with an escort, but screw wireless, my friend has one, and whenever the batteries start to fad out a little, it lacks in performance. Go with either escort or valentine 1 but make sure its wired.

Also, like said above, just dont drive like an idiot, always 20 over and so forth, and evena cheaper model should be good for you. I at most do is 8-10 over, and thats not all the time, mostly just 5 atmost because i am affriad of getting a ticket. (knock on wood)

But - good luck and have fun finding a new radar.

thats interesting... i hadnt had much experience with the escort cordless... that would scare me knowing that the detectors performance would be decreased that easily.

i have the Escort cordless and don't notice any drop off as the batteries get low. It has a warning that tells you the batteries are low and I just keep AA batteries in my glove box. Replace them when the detector says so and no problem. The thing has saved me a couple of tickets already. I also agree that it would not work at all in the glove box. My $0.02. JacksonWRX

how long can you expect it to last on the fresh set of batteries?

Mine lasts about, what i would estimate, at thirty hours. I turn mine off when not necessary (stuck in a traffic jam) and when done. It has a device htat automatically shuts it off if there are no vibrations for twenty minutes. The only downside I have experienced is that the attachment it comes with is C*ap. Buy one from Radio Shack and save the trouble. JacksonWRX

fyi: from what i've read... laser defenders aren't illegal, so get one of those... radar detectors/defenders are illegal... *shrugs*

i'm using a Passport 4500. i have it hard wired and find it very effective and don't seem to get many false alarms (except for motion sensor doors).
you can find them on ebay for $25-$50.

i've been using Escorts since they 1st came out (the big metal box with LED and analog guage). i'm probably going to get a 8500 but not in a rush, since this is working fine right now.

Radar detectors don`t put out waves, that would be very illegal. It is basically just an antennae that radar will hit easily. Therefore, if you mount it in the glove box, it will likely not go off. If it does go off, it will be with a much shorter range. Also, you don`t want to put it low on your windsheild as was also mentioned. That will cut it`s effectiveness as well. If the cop is already specifically painting you, then you are had, that`s it. Newer guns only take a second to lock on. Radar detectors work by picking up the `spillover` from when cops are targeting other cars or when they leave the radar on. Keep it high, just like you would an antenna.

ummmm yeah.... whats so funny....

want me to break it down for ya?

radar gun emits electro-magnetic signals (waves) when used. when you have a radar DETECTOR you are producing electro-magnetic waves at a similar frequency as the radar gun... as a matter of fact it much is the same frequency. since 2 of the same frequencies will not pass through one another (due to the similar physics of radio and the way the air around us is composed) the same frequency requires the signal/wave YOUR DETECTOR puts out to reflect that of the cops. the reflection of the electro-magnetic wave allows the radar detector to detect that the wave has been bounced back.... (meaning a cop) which is why there are different band on a radar detector... (different signals of frequency)

this is why when you pass a store with an alarms system, sometimes the alarm will set off your detector... because the electo-magnetic frequency is similar to that of a cop radar.

this goes to you also samurai

I have the 8500 and for the most part am pleased with it.I find that using the detector with a combination of looking carefully around for cops, and driving conservative whenever possible cuts the chance that you will get pulled over significantly.

Please break it down for me further, because I didn't understand what you are saying.
A radar detector is a simple radio wave receiver, that is all it is. It is tuned to detect the presence of radio waves in a given frequency range. Stores with alarm systems will not set off your radar detector(unless they are motion sensing). WHat you are probably picking up is automatic door sensors(also uses a form of radar that's why it sets it off) from the store, and only then on lower bands(probably X). Emmitting the same frequencies that police radar emits from a device would make your radar detector illegal in ANY state, and would also be an FCC violation, which is also a Federal offense and a pricey one at that.
