Possible engine knock? Any ideas?

I have a 92 gc8 Subaru WRX with 166xxx kms owned car for 4 months now engine oil was fresh when I got it and levels have always been good. At idle I can hear a faint deep knocking sound towards the back of the engine bay. I only noticed this 2 days ago and have to pay really close attention to notice it. Do engine knock get worse over time and start out small like this? Any help appreciated

Remove the Oil filter, cut it open, and look for metal. If metal, check with a magnet. Bearing material is non-magnetic.
