When I connect my Galaxy note 5 via USB, the phone charges but it will not play any music. Screen says there is no device connected. How to fix?

Does it give you the option on the phone of the type of connection? Such as mtp or charge only.

I play music from a thumb drive through my 2011 factory head unit so I think it's just a setting

Yes, i tried all the options...data transfer ect.. still doesnt work
Perhaps it needs to be in a certain directory?

further research online leads me to believe that our head units are not compatible with new android phones... only apple.
Interesting, but not surprising. However Android is compatable with everything if you have the time to mess with it

which i dont lol... i was hoping to plug and play ... oh well guess i gotta get an AUX cord since i dont wanna use bluetooth.
Android OS doesn't allow music to be played through the USB port.
I thought from the start that android was Bluetooth only. This isn't a version issue.
I believe that's in the manual somewhere. Apple can connect through USB but not Bluetooth (at least starlink features)
You need mirrorlink on the headunit which only the 7" have to be able to do it through usb

Why not just use bluetooth?

I have the same issue in my 2014. I use bluetooth for my phone. Friends get to use the aux jack... and USB is reserved for my 10 year old iPod that just sits at the bottom of my glove box.
