It's been awhile since I've posted but I finally got back into the WRX game after trading in my 2011 in 2015. I just picked up a 2017 WRX on Saturday and just had some basic questions of things I'm running into.

My passenger seat if I sit my iPhone 7 plus on the seat the seat belt buzzer will go off. Is this normal? Or do I have to do the old trick with starting the car and clicking the seat belt 20 times to disable it? If this still works with a 2017.

I'd have to read my manual on the 20 click deal. But on my 15, there is no such buzzer for a phone or weights a fair amount more than that even.

i dont like how the light stays on when no one is in passenger seat

it should only come up if seat belt is engaged and below low limit weight
about to take out the bulb

my 17 forester seat was wicked sensitive. Phone, a sock or the wind would set it off WRX stays quiet no matter what I put over there

It actually has nothing to do with weight.. they now use electric capacitance, so anything that has an electric charge (including your body) will trigger the light/chime.

That's interesting, that would mean something on the seat is conductive. I wonder what it is?

There should still be a weight sensor though as they consider the airbag unsafe under a certain size/weight.

I would guess something woven into the fabric itself.. I have a pair of Smartwool gloves with conductive finger tips so you can easily use your phone without having to remove your gloves.

Good point about the weight limit for airbags. I'm not sure how they have it all set up.. maybe the capacitance sensor is just for the seat belt chime, then there is a second weight sensor for airbag deployment? My 02 WRX doesn't have any way to disable the passenger airbag.. our 06 Forester has a key hole where you insert the key and turn it to switch the airbag on and off.. our 17 Outback should have the sensors, it certainly knows when someone is sitting there, but my phone/boxes/etc never set it off.. only a body does (living or dead).

I have an older flip phone and it sets nothing off when I have it on the seat. Hmmmmmm

Just realized we're talking about a 17, and mine is a 15....
