I am looking at a floor plan of an apartment and having problems knowing exactly what they are showing.

When dimensions are given for a room that isn't square, what are they measuring? It is the longest measurement on each side or the total area or what?

Anyone know?

Well if it's a 15' x 20' type of number, it's the biggest distance (one for the x direction and one for the y) If it's a 250' type of number, it's probably a square foot.

Let me see how this works. Here is what the room looks like:

Edit: nm.....that failed horribly.

Then it says the dimensions in the middle as in 10'x12'. The box is a closet. Below the closet is the doorway.

If there's two numbers, one is probably the distance along the bottom of what you drew, and the other is the distance up along the right. Thanks for this thread, I'm bored to he!!.

It looks right on the reply screen....oh well

There is a little dotted line box that goes through the room. Could that mean those are the dimensions for that box or do they mean something else.

I bet it would make more sense if you could see it though.
