When would you need these? What do they prevent? Also, what would your car detonating or knocking feel like? Are these the same thing?

Once you go to a bigger turbo these are going to become necessary to get the most out of it. Detonation sounds like marbles in a can. It is very faint in sound. Best way to keep an eye on it is with a knock sensor like a Knock Link.
