New 2018 WRX

Hello Everyone,
I leased a 2018 WRX Premium yesterday and am excited to be a part of the Subaru community. I am coming from a 2015 GTI that was HEAVILY modified, pushing out over 400WPH. However, as much as I absolutely loved that car, the amount of issues that I had with it made it so I was owning a money pit. Parts of the car that I hadn't touched were failing: both the front and back shocks (DCC), the center armrest, the ****ing horn! Who's horn breaks?!? These on top of the turbo breaking and having to install the Golf R turbo (even if I hadn't tuned the car, there are numerous threads, topics, articles etc. on GTI turbos ****ting the bed prematurely) gave me no choice but to part ways and go another avenue.

Enter WRX,
There are a few questions I have concerning any mods that may be done to these cars, I did a lot of research with the VW before doing anything, so why not now as well?

My first question is I have been reading up on the COBB system and like what it brings to the table. One of the features that is mentioned is the ability to flash back to the stock file. Is this file truly the stock file, or a simulation of the factory file?

Second question is, being my car right now is a lease and I do not want to leave evidence with the dealership that the ECU was tuned if something goes wrong, is there any way for them to find out the car was tuned if the ECU is flashed back to the stock file? With VW/Audi, dealerships have a flash counter installed into the ECU software at the factory, so, any number above 1 that doesn't have evidence to back up that the dealership did it would mean the ECU was tampered with and POOF, warranty gone.

Third, I live in MA, and I'm assuming that along with many other states, in order to pass inspection the car's ECU must meet a certain amount of parameters. Will flashing back to the stock file allow for a successful state inspection (MA doesn't use sniffers or anything like that for normal inspections)?

Fourth, how safe are the COBB tunes, i.e. stage 1 and 1+ on the engine/turbo? I need to get through 3 years without incident.

Five, what hp/tq gains am I looking at for stage 1/1+?

Lastly, I understand that tuning a car after having installed a bolt on [art will yield higher gains, however, if on the chance I do not want to chance anything and just go with a CAI that doesn't require a tune, any suggestions on one that would give me the highest gain out of the box? I saw Mishimoto was a good one or Injen...

Thanks for entertaining my questions, but if anything is worth doing, it's worth doing right. This is the American dream in action! (name the movie :D).

They can 100% tell if it's ever been tuned or modified. There are no questions about that. Simply put don't modify your lease and try to duck it.
Unfortunately, any power mod requires a tune on the WRX. You could do a catback exhaust and a drop in filter but that is about it. Some Subaru dealers aren't as lenient when it comes to tuning as VW/Audi are (like with APR tunes and backing with a warranty) especially with a lease.

it takes a copy of your stock flash, and stores it on the accessport then puts it back if you flash it back

dealers will always no, but they always don't check, my dealer says I can do whatever to the lease as long as I put back to stock at end

you will pass even with the tune, you will have no CEL on.

cobb tunes are very safe, as they are made with the intent of being an everyday drive and does not push the engine past its limits

stage 1, you be looking at low gains, but you will kill the deadzone and make it feel more alive and better throttle. You be looking at 10+ HP. If you want more power to what you had before, you would need stage 3+. Stage 2 + is good though, 313/334 and pulls hard.

you need to tune everything with these cars, if you don't you will throw a CEL and mess your engine up

They will know instantly if the ecu has ever been modified.
