WRX VS NEON R/T Turbo

Cool little video that some guys in my area put together. The race I speak of is the last clip of the movie.

My friend in a Red MR2 Turbo lost to the Neon earlier in the movie...so I thought I would get revenge for him....he he he

The Neon had a large 16g (or bigger), front mount, injectors and all the other electro gizmos to make it all work. He also had all the connections for nitrous, but said that he had no bottle and that the nitrous stuff was just for show.

Anyway, take a look and let me know what you think....he he he.......

Here ALL the mods:

Momo Air Leather Shift Knob
Momo Silver Shift Boot
Lotek Triple Gauge Pod
Autometer Sport Comp Oil Pressure Gauge
Autometer Sport Comp EGT Gauge
Autometer Sport Comp A/F Gauge
Hardwired Bel 980 Radar Detector
Blitz Full Auto Turbo Timer
Eddie Baurer Blue "Racing" Child Seat w/cupholder
Custom Aluminum Deadpedal
Gauge Pack Housing
Clear Fender Lenses
Hyper White Headlight Bulbs
Hyper White Foglight Bulbs
Hyper White Corner Markers
Custom 3 Piece Gutter Guard Grill Mesh
(Scoop, Grill, Lower Grill)
Blue Twisted I STi Emblem
AWD Brake Light
Yellow Painted Calipers
GFB 50/50 Blow Off Valve
Factory STi Short Shift Linkage, Spoiler and Alarm.

and now the "important" go fast stuff:

Blitz SBC i-D Boost Controller
Unichip Piggy Back ECU
Vishnu Performance uppipe
Vishnu Underdrive Crank Pulley
NGK Colder Spark Plugs
K&N Panel Filter
Resonator Transectomy
Redline Gear Oil
Castrol Syntec Engine Oil

I have not ran the car at the track (for obvious reasons- out of season) since the Vishnu Stage 0 install, but before I was running low 13.7s....so hopefully I will muster a 13.4 or better!!

According to the good ol' g-tech, I have run consistant 13.3 1/4 miles.....but I never really did the 1/4 before on it, sooo I am looking at the 0-60 as a better indicator.

Before Stage 0 I was running 0-60 in the low 5s, like 5.1-5.3....

Now I am running between 4.5-4.8 seconds.

The best was actually 4.54 seconds.

But yeah, I did kinda squash him....I talked to him shortly after the race and he was like "damn awd!" with a smile. But watching the video, I think I can honestly say it would have not mattered!! Given AWD, FWD, RWD....with everything else the same, it would have still been ugly.

how good is the reliability of your autometer gauges? i'm looking into almost the same gauges you have, but i've heard from others that autometer's quality is shown by its low price. is it true?

I meant uppipe! Sorry........I have actually had the Vishnu Downpipe on my mind recently, as it is suppose to be released very soon....

Not to mention my cousin has a 97 TSi AWD Talon and I habg out alot with people in the DSM performance scene...those guys have never heard of an up-pipe....so I usually refer to it as a downpipe, I get tired of explaining it to everyone. It usually goes like this:

Them: What you got done?

Me: Blah, Blah, Blah and a performance uppipe that removes one of my cats.

Them: Dont you mean downpipe?

Me: No, my car has that, too.

Them: Insert dumb ass look on face here and thoughts: this guy does not know what hes talking about.

Me: Thoughts: this guy doesn't think I know what I am talking about....I guess Ill have to explain it to him......

Anyway, then I go on to say that the engine is flat....and the exhaust manifold (header) stretches across the bottom of the engine to join all 4 cylinders.....then it connects to a pipe that connects the manifold to the turbo.....this is the uppipe, then I go on to explain the downpipe.....and finally I get a look of understanding........and I think: ah...hes got it!

Anyway....sorry again.....I meant UP-PIPE......

Oh yeah...Autometer.....

Well, they seem accurate. The readings your are suppose to see, you see.

The only real proof of their accuracy I can lend is this:

I asked a bunch of I-clubbers what their different means of reading boost were, and the readings that they were getting when at idle and while engine braking with those gauges.

Well out of the 17 people who responded this was the results:

inHg inHg
Name Device Neutral Idle Vac. Engine Braking Vac.
Keven Autometer -18.00 -
Bamboo Autometer -19.00 -
jimb Autometer -18.00 -22.00
bliz Autometer -15.00 -20.00
zsurfrin Autometer -15.00 -20.00
99venom Autometer -19.00 -
WRXP.. Blitz DTT -18.10 -
300ZX6R NA -18.00 -20.00
dug-e-fresh SBC i-D -17.00 -22.00
jamz SBC i-D -18.00 -22.00
linus011 SBC i-D -17.00 -
Bogey Stock -14.00 -17.70
FreeBMW Stock -19.00 -
baraka VDO -18.00 -20.00
Bad Dogg VDO -19.00 -
andywrx Defi -15.75 -17.32
tmat3 Apexi SAFC -25.00 -28.00

Autometer was pretty darn good. My SBC i-D while on a Dynopack 4 wheel dyno was reading the exact same thing as the computer....so I am very confident with its readings.....and the Autometers seem pretty close....granted altitude will change readings somewhat, and I am not sure where these guys are from and all.......take it for what its worth....and also this was only for one Autometers boost gauge.......

Also as a side note.....1 inHg = 0.49psi.

dug,

I don't see a Neon vs. WRX race in that video. I downloaded it and watched it several times, but it isn't there. Does it end with the camera passing some fire trucks? Maybe I didn't get it all.

Platinum- sounds like you did not get the whole movie....its after the fire trucks..........

BTW- the fire trucks were for an accident on I-70. It involved only one car....a 1st Gen Eclipse/Talon (couldn't tell which:().

Anyhow.....I felt really bad for whom ever was in that car. It was mangled.............looked like a very high speed, control issue.......it was pretty much cut in half. :( :( :( :(

Honestly I would have not put that in the video....

black99gt-

dont get rid of the Grand Am!! I have a 2000 GAGT.....also black w/chrome wheels. Its been a great car....complements the WRX very nicely in a Grand Tourer (thus GT) type of way. I love taking long trips in that car....the WRX on the hand has its limits in terms of comfort and storage. The GAGT has a huge trunk and awesome legroom for driver and passengers.

For the front passenger theres the biggest difference....in the Grand Am someone can actually stretch completely out.....cant do that in the WRX. And then theres the lumbar support and the steering wheel radio controls.....I love that car. I love my WRX more.....but I still love the way the GAGT rides and handles. It is very competent....and actually I think it brakes better than the WRX!!

Motortrend tested a 1999 4 door (heavier than the coupe) and it stopped from 60 in 126ft!!! They referred to it as one of the best braking cars you can get under $30k....

my $.02
