My One Year Impressions: Driving My '17 WRX

I LOVE my WRX! Every time I get in and drive it, it brings forth a smile, a sense of giddiness. And even looking at it, I enjoy is powerful, menacing look. I did 30+ mods and it truly feels like it is my special and unique ride. [My build thread for anyone interested, is linked in my signature below.]

Over more than five decades of driving, I have driven 2,000,000 miles and currently own our 53rd vehicle, so I have lots to compare it to. But what is most important to me now is not practicality, not needing a work truck, not driving a family transporter, but driving a vehicle that is FUN TO DRIVE!

Sure there are more than a few things to legitimately quibble about it, but its overwhelming personality, its kick in the back when the turbo kicks in, its incredible cornering capabilities, well all these and more (minus its minor, IMO, "quibbles"), are major sources of excitement.

I look forward to the next time I drive it, whether it is driving to town to run errands, or even better, my favorite driving it at 9/10's down my traffic-free, curvy country road. Often getting thumbs up from others is not bad either...

I have a 2015 Z06 that is another terrific joy, and yet I truly love to needle my other Corvette friends and tell them the truth, that on some days, I choose to drive my WRX. And even though I drove the WRX twice both today and yesterday, looking forward with excitement about driving it tomorrow -- again choosing the WRX to drive.

We took it on three road trips totaling 9,000 miles this past year. It is a great road trip car -- especially when we leave the interstates instead choosing state and national scenic roads.

Never owned a Subaru before, but this one is a kick. I am so glad I bought it, and get to drive it. Been one terrific year! And looking forward to the next one. More mods planned and more road trips too.

Dang! You actually keep track of number of vehicles and miles? I could probably count up the vehicles but certainly not the miles. As for the WRX experience I agree with all your points. In 9 days I will have had mine 2 years and the drive to and from work is still the highlight of my days. I actually do like mine for the practicality too, though. At the time it was the only car available with >250HP, AWD, manual trans, under $29K, and I average 32 actual mpg with it. Glad to hear it!

Exactly the parameters that led me to the WRX in the first place. Driving the car is a hoot! It inspires passion.

And like passion, some equally dislike its raucousness. That's fine that some do not like the car as is, properly calling it "unrefined." That is also an apt term. Some hate its styling. Fine with me too, for I do not need a car that is "majority liked."

As all who have driven it know, the WRX has very visceral driving dynamics, i.e., it is certainly not for those who want a cushiony, calm place to serenely motor from one place to another.

Just makes me happy!
glad to hear you enjoy it so much! i've had mine about 6 months now, and I still love it just as much as the day I bought it as well.

As said above...all the same criteria led me to the WRX. personally i like the fact the WRX is a bit of a niche car.
Glad you are still enjoying it John!
On Saturday I will have had mine for 3 weeks and.... I LOVE IT TOO!!! I didn't buy this car to ride like a luxury sedan. This is my 3rd subie so I knew I wanted to stay with the manual transmission and AWD but this is my first turbo.

I also leaving town for a 500KM (each way) road trip this weekend. I am beyond stoked to get to drive it that far, and I will definately be taking some "country" roads on the way as I will have brand new snow tires mounted Friday morning.

Glad to see there are others that feel the same excitement when they get to drive it to and from work each day, luckily I drive about 35km each way with plenty of backroad or highway to choose from.
Have a great road trip. Glad you have curvy roads to drive to and from work (do you live just north of Vancouver so you can take Rte. 1 — for there are parts of that road that are such fun; we take it heading to Whistler).

We came back from a 4,000+ miler last month. That was our 4th road trip in the WRX. It was again a hoot to drive, especially around curvy, scenic roads (which was about half of our trip for we get out the scenic roads maps, and plan our vacation trying to go from one to the next as much as we can). BTW, got 33 MPG on the trip. And such fun.
Nice read. Glad you are loving it! Now you have to give us a two-year update next year :)
