McBill's 2011 OBP WRX STi Build Thread

Well, I was not planning on buying one of these but I found this for such a deal that I couldn't let it pass. Either way follow along with me as I document the life of my new (to me) STI!

At this point I will not be doing any power mods, at least for the first year or two. Most of the things you will find in this thread will be lots of pictures and some YouTube videos from my Auto-x adventures starting in the spring of 2017.

The good news is that right from the get go, I fell in love. This car is all that I was hoping to get out of my old WRX and I'm upset that I never went with an STI in the first place. Hindsight is always 20/20 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

I'll update this when I have more pictures to share!

Here are some initial thoughts after having driven this stock for a couple months now.

I'm sure many people have covered this, But I thought maybe I could provide some insight as to what this car is like in comparison to my 2011 WRX stock, and 2011 WRX after the modifications.

Initially the STI is much better than the WRX. You're thinking "Duh", right? Well, I was thinking there wasn't going to be TOO much of a difference. The reality is that difference is much more drastic than I had initially believed. Right off the bat, the STI handles much better, is more responsive, has better acceleration (I would sure hope with the extra 40+hp) and a ton of other little quirks. I remember the WRX being sloppy, and the STI is far from that. The reason I wanted to bring in the additional comparison to my WRX after it was modified was to represent the work needed on the WRX to get it to the starting point of the STI.

Some of you may remember my WRX. For those that don't, HERE is the link. I had done a lot of work to it. I was proud of it. But ultimately, life stepped in and I needed to sell in order to buy a house. At any rate, The STI, in my mind, is nearly on par stock with how I had my WRX built. This was really eye opening. With all the work I had done, money spent and blood, sweat and tears I could have just had the same thing with a much better transmission and driveline to begin with by just spending a few extra thousand dollars. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Hindsight is always 20/20. Now, I would consider my WRX to have been on the quicker side in terms of power after just an intake and TBE + protune, but not by much.

Even with it being almost 6 years old, and well behind the current technology, this car is everything I had hoped to get out of a daily driver/toy STOCK. People rant and rag about the body roll on this generation, and the soft suspension but I think that they are perfect! I don't feel an unbearable amount of body roll like I did with the WRX. The suspension is far from soft, unlike my stock wrx. And finally the acceleration is thrilling in sport sharp from the start.

I honestly can't find many things to complain about. Obviously there are improvements that can be made, but I don't feel the NEED to make said improvements like I did with the WRX. Now if we're talking about WANT, then that's a totally different story  .

So to close out my initial thoughts, I'm much more than pleased with the leap I made to buy this car (wan't really planning to, but it was too good of a deal to pass up). Also, I really hope this will help some people to make a decision if they are in a bind deciding between a WRX and an STI of this generation.

This thread is worthless without more pics. That one pic is nothing but a teaser. I demand more car porn and bewbs.
I can't believe I hadn't subbed yet. I haven't actually been in the forums in a long long time.
Lucky for you, it's only been up for a couple of days. Not a whole lot going on until I can get some more money.

So, out of pure impulse, and the fact that I stumbled on a pretty good deal, I purchased a used Nameless Axel-Back Delete yesterday. Installed today. Love it. Better than I was anticipating. No drone. Here are some pictures.

Before

The product. As you can see the previous owner just took a sawzall to the stock pipe just before the flange. You know what this means right? You got it, that means that my lucky bums get to try to remove some seriously rusted nuts and bolts off of those things while they aren't attached to anything. Lovely. Boy was that not so fun. Ended up having to let them soak in PB Blaster overnight. The worst part was trying to find leverage while holding the pipes down. Anyhow I got them loose and cleaned the ends free of any gasket scrap.

Next up, remove the stock mufflers. Easy, right? Never. I too let those soak overnight in PB blaster. 3 popped loose with a breaker bar. The 4th and last nut was so rusted that after cleaning all the rust chunks off, the nut had shrunk 2 sizes. Cleaned it off, pounded a 12mm socket on there and what would you know, just shredded the outside of the nut. Forewent all other actions and just straight to the grinding wheel to cut that bastard right off.

VIOLA. Shoulda started with that route, took 2 minutes.

All the rest is easy stuff. Done. Not too shabby if I say so myself for only being 3 inch double wall tips.

Oh yeah and I went ahead and stuck my tail light overlays on as well. Booty for reference.

The stock exhaust on this gen looked terrible. The mufflers were set back so far under the bumper that it just didn't look right. Best thing I did was throw the Q300 on. Your deletes look so much better.

And great call on those overlays. I had the same ones...definitely looking good homie!

Next up - do something with the chrome trunk trim :D

Working on it. SPT cover is next on my list, as well as the special edition black side badges. However, Subaru Genuine doesn't carry the SPT trunk trim anymore. I found some shady website that I'm not so sure about that has them....
Booty shot, potato quality picture.

UPDATE: I picked up a set of 05-07 Gold STI BBS wheels off a gentleman in Wisconsin. Had Michelin X-Ice Xi3's installed last week. But I wont be slapping the winter shoes on for probably another month or two. Still unseasonable warm here. I wanted to wait until we consistently get about 2 weeks worth of average highs being below 60 degrees and forcasting for such as well. Usually in Ohio, that's not until late october or early November depending on the year. This year so far October has been unseasonably warm.

Also, I updated my second post to reflect my reflection.... ****, this isn't philosophy..
really love the look with those rimmmmzzzz:thumbup:
Nice! I need to get a good detail in.
