Here are some initial thoughts after having driven this stock for a couple months now.
I'm sure many people have covered this, But I thought maybe I could provide some insight as to what this car is like in comparison to my 2011 WRX stock, and 2011 WRX after the modifications.
Initially the STI is much better than the WRX. You're thinking "Duh", right? Well, I was thinking there wasn't going to be TOO much of a difference. The reality is that difference is much more drastic than I had initially believed. Right off the bat, the STI handles much better, is more responsive, has better acceleration (I would sure hope with the extra 40+hp) and a ton of other little quirks. I remember the WRX being sloppy, and the STI is far from that. The reason I wanted to bring in the additional comparison to my WRX after it was modified was to represent the work needed on the WRX to get it to the starting point of the STI.
Some of you may remember my WRX. For those that don't, HERE is the link. I had done a lot of work to it. I was proud of it. But ultimately, life stepped in and I needed to sell in order to buy a house. At any rate, The STI, in my mind, is nearly on par stock with how I had my WRX built. This was really eye opening. With all the work I had done, money spent and blood, sweat and tears I could have just had the same thing with a much better transmission and driveline to begin with by just spending a few extra thousand dollars. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Hindsight is always 20/20. Now, I would consider my WRX to have been on the quicker side in terms of power after just an intake and TBE + protune, but not by much.
Even with it being almost 6 years old, and well behind the current technology, this car is everything I had hoped to get out of a daily driver/toy STOCK. People rant and rag about the body roll on this generation, and the soft suspension but I think that they are perfect! I don't feel an unbearable amount of body roll like I did with the WRX. The suspension is far from soft, unlike my stock wrx. And finally the acceleration is thrilling in sport sharp from the start.
I honestly can't find many things to complain about. Obviously there are improvements that can be made, but I don't feel the NEED to make said improvements like I did with the WRX. Now if we're talking about WANT, then that's a totally different story :thumbup: .
So to close out my initial thoughts, I'm much more than pleased with the leap I made to buy this car (wan't really planning to, but it was too good of a deal to pass up). Also, I really hope this will help some people to make a decision if they are in a bind deciding between a WRX and an STI of this generation.
