hey i have a wrx impreza ej20 1997 manual sedan..
I had the engine rebuilt n now on start up it knocks.. but after its warm it stops.. i dont know what to think of it or how i should go abotu fixing it as i can never show a mechanic what i mean because by the time i get to the specialist its warmed.. and nz specialists are crap!..
hopefully some one knows.. ??

If it stops when the engine is warm, it could be piston slap. This is not uncommon. There were UK WRX and STi cars with piston slap that were reluctantly rebuilt under warranty at the time (late 90s) and generally the piston slap simply returned.

If there are no other symptoms or problems and the noise goes away when the car is warm, suspect piston slap. Your options are to do nothing or to leave the car overnight at a garage and then have them start the motor cold the next day so they can hear it also.

I should add that if it is in fact piston slap my car has had it for the past nine years, as have many others.

Hmm thankyou for that..
Yeah I was told from the garage that did the rebuild not to worry because they took the fuel breather out to make the car lighter and the noise would be due to that.. But I wasn't happy with that answer as its nothing to do with the fuel.. Or the breather as it wouldnt make any difference to the wieght.
The sound comes from the engine.. Hence why I say NZ garages are crap.
