Hi guys. I noticed that my tail pipes seem to have a lot of soot and what looks to be oil on them. I’m not sure if it’s water mixed with soot or just plain oil. I am in New Jersey and it’s winter so it’s very cold. I notice this on cold start up and it smokes a bit then goes away. Am I right to assume the smoke is just vapor from the cold? Here is a picture of the tail pipes. Please help. I saved for a long time to buy this car and want to make sure it’s ok.

Yea. It's normal. It's carbon build up from gas in the exhaust tip.

I get a lot of this build up if I fill up with Shell. Though, I get much less of this build up if it's Exxon or Mobil gas. I would guess that the additives are cleaner and it builds up less.

You can just clean it with auto cleaning detergent and paper towels.
There's also some youtube vids if you want to get it completely spotless.
